Hi everyone, brand new to the site. Been looking around for some ideas on modding my boat. Just bought a '70s Lund (i think its a '70s anyway), actually my dads old boat (gave me one heck of a deal no naturally i took advantage  ). I'm looking to do a full floor/casting deck mod but for right now im just looking to update the paint job. Just need some insight into what remover product would be best for getting the old factory paint off, correct primer and paint to get the job done. I have access to several sprayers for applying the paint/primer but was wondering about doing spray cans. Just need to know what the best but most inexpensive route would be. I'll post some pics of my boat up here shortly so you have a better idea what im working with.
Thanks guys!!

:WELCOME: to Tinboats!

I just called a couple local sand blasting op's and found a fair price. Stripper is expensive, messy, and you still have to sand. Quotes ranged from 200, 100, and finally found one for $50! Didn't even use primer and has held on great.

For some reason the site wont let me upload pics. It keeps saying the max size allowed is 2MiB. Anyone??

Your pictures have a max size of 800 pixels x 600 pixels, and a maximum file size of 2mb. If your image is too large, resize it down to 800x600. If the image size is within range, but the file is too large, you have to change the file extension. Perhaps the image is a xxxxx.gif for example--if you convert that to xxxxx.jpg, the file size will decrease to an allowable size.

Once you make the changes in your computer, you will have to post the images to the internet to a place that will host the images--such as facebook or photobucket.

Once uploaded to your image hosting webpage of choice--copy the images URL, then come back to tinboats and add it to your posting using the Img feature located at the toolbar of your reply/post. Then [-o< it works lol (no it will as long as the image is the correct size)

Alright, got the picture thing figured out. Had to adjust the Mega pixel rating on my camera. So here it is, 14ft 1976 Lund. Not sure what model, anyone??

Hey Skippyo,

I'm new here as well. I've been a stocker for a little while but thanks for breaking the ice for me! I have essentially the same boat. The fantastic S-14 model. The only difference i see is the 20" transom and mine is 15". I'm really looking to do essentially the same as what your planning except the exterior work. Mine has a good paint job. Looking forward to bouncing idea's and builds around here with you and others. Thanks for posting! Matt

Alright, spent the last couple days brainstorming here and I have a pretty good idea what I'm going to do with the front deck. The only thing is I have no way to draw it up on my computer so does anyone know of a free program I can download? Either way I well start and hopefully finish the casting deck this weekend.

Hi 2stix

Welcome to the site! Newbie just like me, eh? Had no idea what the model was so thanks for that! Hopefully gonna get the front deck squared away this weekend and like most of the builds on here I'm going to use the front bench and the bow seat for the casting deck with some additional support. I'm going to frame out up with some ripped 2x4 to add additional weight to the front. I'm sure I'll be putting in some storage hatches to, just undecided on location. .

Okay, so what i thought was just a 2 or 3 hour project ended up taking the better part of the day. After brainstorming, runninng to town (20 min drive on way), walking around Menards, brainstorming some more, and finally making the first cut was 2-3 hours in itself #-o . But long story short, i got the front deck all finished minus the carpet and locks for the storage doors. I'll finish those minor things up next weekend when i have time. So here it is!! :D

Holy smokes its been a LONG time!!! My apologies, but life has its way of throwing curves, doesn't it! Well for my long overdue update I've been slowly getting materials together to tear into this boat big time....as soon as the snow melts :? Got all of my alluminum angle, got a sweet deal too! 69ft for $24 fresh off the die :D ! Also have my livewell pump and bilge pump plus all of the fittings ready to go as soon as mother nature complys. I'll get a sketch up asap so you guys can see what I'm going to do with the rest of the boat. Pretty much got everything figured out, and i tell you what am i getting excited for the transition from hard water season to the open water season!! Best wishes everyone!

So my 2-3 week project is on year 3..... :| But opener is right around the corner and I need to get this thing done. This weekend one of my buddies will be helping remove both of the bench seats to finally get the floor framed up and god willing get the whole floor done. I'll be using aluminum angle and rivets to frame the floor, and 5/8 treated plywood for the floor itself. I'll be posting pics as we make progress.

One more thing, what kind of paint should I be using for the outer hull. I will be using some sort of Marine grade paint but I don't really know the specific stuff ill need for the aluminum. any insight would be extremely helpful.

I've also been thing about putting on a roll on bed liner rather than paint. Thoughts?

Nice looking Lund! Just finishing up mine. You are supposed to use self etch primer on the bare aluminum then topcoat. I used a epoxy paint over bare metal and it seems to be on there pretty good. Time will tell if I made a mistake. Good luck with your build, post plenty of pictures.

Was just looking at your pictures and I see you used some pressure treated wood. If the PT wood is in contact with the aluminum it will eat up the metal. Chemicals in there react with aluminum.

You don't want to use pressure treated wood on an aluminum boat. The copper used to treat the wood will react badly with aluminum.

I'll probably be reworking the front deck too then..... :?

Alright, we got some progress made on the boat this weekend. Saturday went great and we got everything gutted out, measured and cut materials. Today (sunday) was pretty rocky mostly because of the constant rain, yes we fought through it and yes we got the floor all framed up! We were soaked and cold by the time it was all said and done but I happy with how it turned out.

Also, the treated 2x4 that I used for the front casting deck hasn't caused any corrosion as there is a factory paint inside the boat. It's only making contact with aluminum in 3 small areas anyway so I'm leaving it in. The only corrosion I did find was on the bottom of my aluminum pedestal base. It looked like the substance you'd find on the posts of a car battery. However it wasn't nearly as serious as some other posts suggest. For the record it has been exposed to the elements for the last 2 years without so much as a cover. That includes sitting through 2 Minnesota winters and spring thaws. With as little corrosion as there was after sitting that long I doubt it's as serious as some would lead me to believe.
