Starting next season I'm going to concentrate on bass fishing with a fly rod. Back in the day I fly fished for trout on the north shore of Lake Superior but have since sold off all my fly fishing stuff.

I'm going to get a new 8 weight, four-piece graphite rod. Most of my fishing, well over 90% will be in fresh water. I often take a winter vacation in Belize and could potentially do some fly fishing while there. I'm wondering what are the components of the rod and reel that make it salt water worthy and whether I can use the same equipment for fresh water. I assume the difference is in the materials but don't know if the salt water gear would in some way not work for fresh water.

The salesman at BPS explained it the same way. A little more hefty with
salt "resistant" materials. Then, the rest is left to the angler to choose from.
Such as the tackle, etc. Also, floating, intermediate or sinking line.
We chose the intermediate line with 20lb leader for salt water. Will drop back
to lighter leader and tippet for the fresh water varieties. Like all fishing tackle,
WASH WELL with fresh water and blow dry after each salt water excursion.

My wife is Chinese and only been here in the U.S. for about 3 years.
Last summer, we went to the Saltwater Sportsman Show in Tampa and
attended a few of the fishing seminars. She watched the fly fishing guy
like a kid looks at Santa Claus for the first time.
She was mesmerized with the fly caster and never got over it. LOL.
In the past two years, she has become a very skilled and successful angler
in both fresh and salt water using only spinning gear.
For Christmas, I got her a new 8/9 weight, two piece graphite saltwater fly rod at BPS
and within a couple of hours in the front yard, she had pretty much captured the technique.
Currently, I am building her a 1236 V-Nose flat bottom Jon for her own fishing machine
tailored for electric only and spin fishing from the sitting in the chair position.
NOW - she wants a CASTING PLATFORM at the bow for fly fishing LOL LOL.
So, back to the drawing board for the decking portion in the design.

Hopefully, she will be landing many L/M bass and Crappie soon on the fly !!!
Not to mention the Red Drum, Spotted Sea Trout and Snook from the Mosquito Lagoon !!

This is my Fresh Water fly reel that I loaned my brother a few years ago,
He used it in salt water and apparently did not wash it after a salt trip and just put it away.
This is how I got it back last week. The paint was starting to pucker and crawl
on the pot metal frame then after soaking it in vinegar, the paint just let go.
It is not salvageable and he agreed to replace it. The rod was fine, the line was trashed.
Yes, you CAN use fresh water fly gear in salt water, BUT - use common sense when it comes
to putting it away after each trip. SALT IS THE ENEMY !!!!

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FISHING GEAR
