replacing the transom on our tinny, reading about treating the wood i've seen the terms "Spar Urethane" and "Spar Varnish" used interchangeably for sealing boat woods. They seem to be a different product with the same outcome? is there a difference?

Either will be satisfactory. Spar varnish will have a longer cure time. The urethane will be a harder finish. Both will offer adequate protection..

Also urethane will also provide UV protection if you plan on leaving it as the top coat. If your going to paint over the spar then varnish will suffice.
