    Rainsuit

I second the Simms brand. I have their G3 waders, and they are fantastic. I cannot comment on the rain gear, but I have other Simms products (boots, hats, shirts, etc.), and I'm always searching for more. Another angle to consider, is to look at outdoor/hiking gear companies' packable rain...

    Fly fisherman advice wanted

If you're mainly fishing for LMB, I would suggest a 9' 7 or 8 weight, leaning more toward the 8. The 8 will allow you to throw bigger flies, and will be better suited for other pursuits (salt, pike, etc.). As to the number of sections, it depends on if you will be traveling and taking your...

    Deck, what's level?

I can't really tell the size of your boat. If you're dead set on moving your deck up, then I would at least make it so that the finished deck height is flush with your front "step". You could rivet a piece of angle onto the front step, and run your bracing off of that back to the middle seat...

Poll - Preferred bow-mount trolling motor control

Hand control for me. I fly fish from the deck, and the fly line likes to stick and get tangled around everything. I had a cable foot controlled, but I got sick of bending down and untangling my line. I ended up trading that for a 1983 15hp Johnson.

Question on Wiring Multiple Lights to One Switch

For your navigation lights, you'll need a DPDT (double pole, double throw) switch. That way you can have both anchor and bow lights on while running and anchor only on when you're not. Just thought I'd throw that out there, since you included nav lights in your question, and it hadn't been...

New boat with questions about draining - v hull

As far as I know, it is factory. I plan on putting a flat floor in, but I don't want water just sitting under there. I have a cover to keep the rain out, but I want it to drain if I start taking on water while in the water. I guess I'll just drill a couple small holes and see if it works out...

1983 Johnson 15 hp motor, new boat, help

I ordered the new parts, along with some other stuff I needed for the motor. It was $130 and should be here tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll get it all buttoned up and on the lake for a shake down trip before my vacation.

New boat with questions about draining - v hull

Hello all, I recently traded my flat bottom 1648 for 16' v hull. It is a '70s Smoker Craft. I decided to trade because my needs had changed, and I will be using the boat more on the lakes than on the rivers. Anyway, it seems to hold water between the seats on the floor. On my flat bottom...

1983 Johnson 15 hp motor, new boat, help

Well, I have decided to do the repair myself. I plan on ordering all the parts within the next day or so. Is there a better place than boats.net? I figure I will be getting the new bearing housing, O-ring, seals, etc. I actually already tore it down, and inspected (briefly) the internals...

1983 Johnson 15 hp motor, new boat, help

This is going to be a long post, just a warning. I appreciate all your input. I will summarize the post first, hoping to get some feedback. Details will follow, if you want to read that far. Summary: 1. Will my 1983, 15hp Johnson (J15RTA) plane out a 1970's Smoker Craft Sport Angler 166F...

    New member & boat owner

Good to see you over here, Phylo. Boat looks great. Here is a link to some of the projects/conversions that were posted on the site. The list makes it easy to navigate all the builds. Look through them to get ideas for your build. https://www.tinboats.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=3156

    Monark 1648 Mod

Looks exactly like my boat. I'm currently putting in an aluminum frame and decking. I'm hoping to finish it up in the next few weeks. As for an outboard, I used a '79 Johnson 15 last summer on a lake, and it pushed me, wood decking, trolling motor, battery, gas, some gear, etc. 18.6 mph top...

    1983 Johnson 15hp fuel problem?

Well, after some research, it appears that my throttle plate is not broken. It looks like I need to perform the "link and sync" and adjust my low jet to get her running slower.

    1983 Johnson 15hp fuel problem?

I put fuel down the throat, and she started right away. Let it run for 10 minutes or so, but couldnt idle down. The slowest I could go without it stopping was the "start" position. It looks like the roller stops opening the valve when I go past "start". It also looks like the black plate...

    1983 Johnson 15hp fuel problem?

First off, let me preface this post by saying this is my first outboard. I was drawn to the early 80's johnnyrudes since they seem pretty much bullet-proof and parts seem to be readily accessible. Another reason is that I "rented" a '79 15hp last summer and it pushed my (heavy at the time with...

    Recessed Trolling Motor Foot Pedal

https://www.tinboats.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=31807&start=30 Not mine, but I was reading his build the other day. Page three, fourth post is where it starts. I think there were some modifications made toward the end of the build. Not bad for $3.

On the ribs, or on the foam?

You will want to secure the flooring, otherwise the foam is pointless, as it will just float the floor up and out of the boat. The whole point to the foam is to keep your boat from sinking to the bottom.

1992 20hp Johnson advice needed, possible purchase

Well, he wants $50 for it, plus he's going to throw in a 95 mariner 20hp long shaft parts motor. Deal or no? I also found an early-mid 70s (I think) evinrude 25 that hasn't been started in 3 years for $275. Thinking that is a better deal.

1992 20hp Johnson advice needed, possible purchase

Thanks for the replies so far. I am in Indiana, if that matters. I know it's probably not the best idea, but if I can pick it up for a song, then source all the parts needed and install them, I may have a good running motor for half (or less than half) of what I've seen them go for on cl, or I...
