Re: TOWING WITH FWD

Depends. Unless you are towing a really light boat under 14 feet or so, you need a better tow vehicle. Last fall I lost power and ended up going ashore at a place far from the boat ramp. I got my one ton Ford diesel down to the beach which was gravel. I was careful not to back the rear wheels in ver...

Re: So I hit a log yesterday...

Some lakes have plenty of hazards, but the water is clear and you can see em. I would not go back there. In the 1960s I was on a multi-day family trip in an 25 foot Chris Craft. We hit a log buried in the mud. It mangled the prop and bent the drive shaft on the Chevy 283 inboard. We got towed to a m...

Re: Who Builds Better Tins?

I would rather have an older even beat up welded aluminum boat with a windshield than a brand new riveted boat. Outboards make everything better. Four strokes are hard to beat, especially the Japanese ones. I like a canvas top and side curtain and plenty of depth, at least 25 inches of freeboard. So...

Re: fishing partner

People always ask if I have a second rod stamp. You bet, one for me and one for my dog. As my friends have aged they have gotten wimpy. Last week we are set up to go and the guy says it might rain and he doesn't want to go out in a boat. People are goofy about going out on the water. They seem afrai...

Re: Show me your cooler setups in your boats

I have a small Igloo marine cooler around 28 quarts for lunch and a couple of beverages near the transom where it is not in the way.
In the bow I have a regular 60 quart Igloo marine cooler for keeping fish. It is secured to the bow rails with a couple of bungee cords.

Re: Help! Crack in hull

I would not mess around with structural issues with a boat. Strip the paint off the area in question and have it welded by someone who is good with aluminum. Many good welders have little experience with welding aluminum.

Re: Question regarding paint

People seem to have a lot of anxiety about painting aluminum.
For a fishing boat, there is no need to get exotic and use epoxy paint for instance.
Priming is important. I have had good success using Rustoleum rattle can enamel and and also applying quality marine enamel with a brush.

Re: Personal Best

Way to go man. Looks like a rainbow hen.
I have been able to catch a lot of good rainbows, and tear up some equipment, but I have yet to break the 5 pound barrier.

Painting an aluminum boat help

There is no need to go back to bare aluminum if the old paint still has good adherence.
Get the barnacles off, sand it and get the oil and grease off and paint it.
I have done some body work on a 19 foot boat and had good succes with rattle cans on a clean, smooth surface.

20030 Mercury 9.9hp 4 Stroke Outboard - Help with Pricing

The Merc is probably a $1,000 engine around here.
There are lots of great outboards around for cheap. With the new 2 cycle oils, even the older motors can be run pretty clean.
For once in awhile use I would buy an older engine in good shape. Run it dry and use it once in awhile to keep in shape.

fishing partner

Be careful who you put in your boat. Over the years I have taken plenty of people out. Some are great boat guests. They pay their way. They help out. They appreciate being on the water. Many don't and they get asked only once. I have a few friends that like to fish. My best fishing partner is my dog.

First time boater seeking help/advice on boat

A nice rig. Just remember that being a bass boat it looks like a flat bottom and little freeboard. Watch the weather in such a boat and get off the water when the wind starts.

Questions on 1987 Johnson 4hp

I had a motor like that on a sailboat once. It was a one pull motor. Sounds like the fuel system alright. Have you done all the obvious like a new fuel filter? Rebuilding the carb might be the answer. When I returned to the marina with that motor I always disconnected the fuel line and ran the motor...

DIY anchor!

All the rage in the PNW. All the cool kids have them with special mounts on the bow. Commercial ones can cost a lot. Nice job.
