What should I coat the wood with, or is it even necessary? Resin? thanks in advance

Good water sealer or spar varnish. Thompsons water sealer has worked fine for folks on this board, and the Behr version (from Home Depot) has done me fine on some benches I had to make.

If it's treated wood, paint it, put something between the aluminum and wood to prevent corrosion.Treated wood has copper in it.Copper corrodes aluminum really quick and really bad.
