Hey i have a ford explorer, i was thinking about getting a 12ft jon boat and sticking it out of the back window through the whole car with the seats down. My question is will it fit if i strap it down? when i had a pick up truck i would strap down a 17ft canoe with the tailgate down and have it lay on the roof of the truck. It seems like i could do the jon boat with the explorer, but im not going to buy one it i cant fit it where i want it. thanks.

Lol I'm sorry because I understand that's all you have to work with, but that would be the funniest rig running down the highway with a 12 foot jon hanging out the back glass of a Ford Explorer. My advice is to find a boat on a trailer for the Explorer.

your best bet will be to use a tape measure. spending a few minutes measuring and comparing notes would save money and the trouble of buying a boat you cant work with.....the other option is to buy a trailer like the rest of us.

Well i usually fish in a private lake, so i didn't want to get a trailer and have to get insurance on the boat.

Insurance, boat... what's that?
Your auto policy should cover your boat and trailer when being towed.

Put a roof rack on the Explorer. I've seen many a jon on top of SUVs. One time my brother had a 10ft jon we strapped to the roof of his Dodge Shadow. That was a funny thing to see riding down the road. It was either his Shadow or my Escort, his boat -his car.

I didn't do a search, but used to be a device called a "Bumper Buddy," which was a pole which basically clamped onto the transom of your boat, and was mounted on a trailer hitch. You then walked the boat up and around to put the front end on the top of the vehicle. Worked a treat, as I recall.

I understand what you want to do, but there's a reason you haven't seen it done, and trust me, small boat owners have tried just about every way to get the tin to water. :)

Best wishes.

If i can have the boat on a trailer with out having to insure it that would be great, ill look into it.

My home owners policy covers my boat and trailer, with no additional charges. My rep said I was covered on land, and water. Might look into it, you may already be covered.

I would get a trailer if was you. I have a 12' and hauled it around in the back of my truck for awhile and that was a pain!

a cheap trailer or homemade trailer is definately the way to go.. ive never heard of anyone with insurance problems on a boat trailer... guess it could depend on where you live.. i know some people have boats and gear insured.....

worst case scenario it wouldnt be super hard dto throw a 12' flatbottom on the roof of an explorer.. they weigh practically nothing..i use to load my 15-16' plastic/fiberglass Canoe ontop of a jeep commacnhe aswell as my Blazer by myself.. and it weighed quite a bit more than small 12ft tin will.. just pull of trolling motor and battery and throw it up.

Another trailer idea would be to buy a small 4'x8' utility trailer at harbor freight. you could use it to haul your boat and just slide it off at the launch. When you weren't using it for your boat, you could put sides on it and use it as a utilitly trailer.

FOUND IT !!!

Not "bumper buddy," but...

didn't look for prices, but this seems like a good idea.

best wishes

It won't fit. Don't ask me how I know. I've never tried it. And, I've certainly never got hung up on a tree stump while trying it. And, in now way were there two or more crediable witnesses there to see it not happen. #-o
