Friends,

Do any of you have a HIN decoder for the 17-foot Grumman Eagle double-ended canoe, that I was given this morning??

The HIN: GBME9513M84E-7PO

I'd like to know the year of manufacture & any other data that the HIN gives.

yours, satx

Johnny,

NOPE. - I can see no other numbers on the canoe. = The HIN that I posted is stamped into the top of the stern.

The old tin canoe needs a few replacement screws & 2 fender washers, to replace the ones on the stern deck that are "stripped". - It's not even dented anywhere.

I'm going to clean it up (it's been stored outside for YEARS & is "some kind of dirty".) & fish some of the smaller lakes in the city parks around here, as NO powered boats are allowed.

yours, satx

Johnny,

THANKS. ======> I was quite PLEASED that the "nice lady" gave it to me. - It seems to be quite well-built & out of "heavy gauge" aluminum. NOT like the cheap-looking/flimsy tin canoes that I usually see.
(LOTS of cleaning up will be my next project.)

In your opinion, what's the best aluminum polish to remove corrosion??

yours, satx

Tex - there are so many opinions and products for cleaning aluminum.
I often see the chemicals for cleaning pontoon boats at the top of the list.
All my boats are painted, so I really can't suggest one product over the other.
just google "cleaning oxidized aluminum" also on YouTube.

all the best !!

Johnny,

I figured that you OR one of our other talented members would know WHICH product works BEST.
(IF you ask the vendor, ALL of them will say that their offering is the best one of all.)

yours, satx

our fellow member here, Pappy, has some very nice
polished aluminum boats. He talks about a lot of elbow grease,
Brillo/SOS Pads, Phosphoric Acid, more elbow grease, lots of "hands on" work.
His quote from Oct/2015: "Mix with water and use in a sprayer.
Start from the bottom up to keep from streaking the hull. Have a water hose handy.
Third was using SOS pads on the inside and outside to remove what oxidation was left.
Use water with them. They leave a super fine finish on the hull.
You will feel the oxidation being removed as, all of a sudden,
the pads get very easy to move on the hull. I never used sandpaper with these methods"

from what I have read on the interweb, there are only a couple
of treatments of the "spray on/wash off" variety.

if your canoe was used in a rocky environment and has a lot of deep
scratches and gouges on the bottom, you may have to address that
issue with an orbital sander then finish up with hand sanding
with wet or dry papers. The amount of work that is involved depends
on your vision of the end result. Of course, "more pretty = more work".

I would suggest you build two saw horses to the size that you can
rest your upside down canoe on with the comfortable height for you to reach the middle
while holding tools. the saw horses should be about a foot wider than the resting points
of the canoe and a wood block screwed to the ends of the sawhorses so the canoe won't accidentily slide off.

Avoid those plastic folding sawhorses, that is just asking for trouble.

Hope this helps you some - - - - Looking forward to your journey !!

Johnny,

THANKS.

Btw, this particular canoe was seldom used at all. - Instead, it was simply bought, used a few times on local lakes, placed under a tree "in the back lot" at least a decade ago & thereafter "forgotten". - I see NO major scratches at all.
(The "nice lady" told me, "It's in the way. I wish that you'd take it with you when you go.")

wow - good score for you !!!
with less than $50 investment, it will look new again !!
wishing you fair winds and following seas.

(I still have very bad flashbacks of when me and two of my
shipmates almost drowned 2 miles from shore when our
canoe capsized [no life jackets] ..... lucky for us, there was an old Itialian
fisherman nearby and he pulled us to shore - very lucky that day).
so now my personal rule of thumb is - don't go out further than
you can comfortably swim.......

I will never forget it as it was on the same day that Jack Benny died: December 26, 1974

Johnny,

Get caught out in a canoe here in South Texas without wearing a life-jacket & you likely will soon be "lighter in the wallet". = Our TX Game Wardens have "little sense of humor" about people who do that. - They will find something to "ticket" you for.

Johnny,

"being young & stupid can kill you" = SHORE NUFF.
(As I look back on my misspent youth & certain "adventures", I'm surprised to be ALIVE.)

THANKS for the good wishes. = I'm going to go buy a gallon of aluminum cleaner tomorrow. - We'll see how that goes.
(I also have to come up with some sawhorses.)

Friends,

Do any of you have any idea about how much JJK's Pontoon Cleaner that it takes per 100SF? - IF I buy any, I don't want to buy too much OR too little.

yours, satx

according to their website, JJV concentrated cleaner is
sold in quart size only..... one quart makes 4 gallons.
(2oz cleaner per gallon of water).
a typical coating usually covers about 400-500 square feet per gallon.

JJV'S BEST Concentratrated Boat Wash
Quart = $21.00 + Shipping
Makes 16 quarts (4 gallons)

when you go to place the order, ask the sales agent
if they have a smaller size.

Johnny,

THANKS. = The two "instructional videos" that I found on the www say to use JJK's product FULL STRENGTH.
(I'm glad that I asked.)

yours, satx

if you used it straight from the bottle,
one quart will cover approx. 100-200 square feet.
depending on the applicator you use and how often
you wet it down.
I would suggest that (if you do buy this product) you
make a half cup of 50/50 mix first and do a test patch
on a small flat area to see how it works. (brush it on with a paint brush).
if it works fast and awesome like in the videos, back up
to 1 part cleaner to 2 parts water to make your solution go further.

good luck !

Johnny,

THANKS for your help/advice.

I heard from MARAHON BOATS, Inc. (the current owner of Grumman Boats) & was told that the 17-foot Eagle canoe was built, according to the HIN, in 1984. :D

yours, satx

To All,

I regret to inform everyone that my Grumann canoe was stolen while I was out of town. = Someone has strong arms & a BIG set of bolt-cutters & was BOLD as the canoe was stolen between 0800-1100 hours.
(My neighbor said that the canoe was there when he went grocery shopping & GONE when he got back at 1100.)

What I said under my breath, when I got David's call to tell me that SAPD isn't even interested in looking for my canoe, isn't fit to post here. = The responding officer did NOTHING except give David a case number.
(David gave the LEO the serial number & he reportedly said, "I guess I can write it down, if you want me to.")

yours, satx
