Looking for some advice on rebuilding my transom. I want to make it strong enough to support a 300 pound motor. My neighbor has a tig welder and is willing to help me out. Should I make a template out of cardboard and weld the transom skin first then build the frame? Also going to have to put pods on to help displace some weight. If anyone has some basic plans for diy pods that would be great. thanks

more than likely the 30 will go back on to sell it. obviously need a longer wider haul for that power. want the transom to be able to hold the weight regardless in case i throw a mud motor back on.

I'd imagine you'll need some long float pods to keep the back end up. Totally following this thread. Check out the guys@ screem and fly forum. I bet this would be somewhat right up Their alley.

Don't want to rain on your parade but... What was the boat originally rated for? Guessing around 40hp. Now u want to more than double that plus double the expected weight? Ever been in a flat bottom in a quick turn maneuver? They don't turn well... it will slide first then suddenly bite and can throw you right over the side. Over powered flats also love to go airborne at high speeds with rather small waves. When running into the wind I've seen many times the front come up and on several occasions rise over 90° then flip. It's your boat and your life... But please don't take any kids or friends with you.

yes pods would be a must. What im really looking for now is advice on transom frame design. I drew something up and was hoping people had some input on it. Do I need that vertical piece on each side or will the top and bottom horizontal piece be ok. 2x4 or 2x6. Was hoping to get material tomorrow.

It's a mod v round chine boat. not to worried about sliding. Weight will definitely be an issue. my 250# plus mud motor did fine without pods. Adding pods and moving battery plus gas up front will help. I appreciate your concern and will be safe about it. I can always put the 30 back on if its too harry. just looking for some advice on how to rebuild the transom. thanks

Progress

Welding is done. Going to try and mount motor today and get her out duck hunting a few times before everything freezes up. Been a long project but thanks to my neighbor Nick we got it done.

Nice job on the transom rebuild. If you still need pods for it go to beaver tail pods site. With a 90 planned for the transom I'd definitely go with the largest I could fit. The smallest I'd use would be there mediums. I'm also relatively sure the transom will handle the torque now. That's a lot of weight for that boat. Be sure to wear a life vest! ha ha ha

Just gonna send it.

Maiden voyage. Half throttle got me into the 40’s. I had a pretty good leak around a rivet That needs to be touched up. Definitely way to much power but had to see for myself. Fun yes. Practical no. Might take it on a hunt just because of its awesome load carrying capabilities. The electric tilt in combo with the jack plate had her on plane within seconds. Made two quick adjustments and she was running good. I’ll probably throw the 30 back on for rest of duck season and hang onto 90 for bigger boat. Thinking of having an uncle j built this winter if funds allow.

Not knowing what kind of waters you hunt have you thought about a jet pump for it?

Mostly muddy marsh with some sand and stumps here and there in se wisconsin. I'm going to leave the 90 on for the rest of duck season. I've thought about having an 1854 built that can handle the 90 and can always put a mudmotor on if thats the direction i want to go.

Sits in water not to bad.
