Hey guys, I'm just starting on year #2 in my boat with no real plans to upgrade in '09....BUT, as one who scours every topic he can find on aluminum boats, I'm always thinking about what the next boat might be. Two boats that interest me greatly are the Lund Alaskan 20' side console, and the Starcraft Freedom 18' side console. Do any of you own, or have experience with either of these boats? Here is why I'm drawn to these...tell me if my thinking is right! lol

1.I want more room in the boat, even if there are only 2 people. My 16' side console is a little cramped.
2.I want a wider, more stable boat
3.I want a the boat to remain relatively light, and these 2 models are not all "bulked-up" like alot of the bigger Starcraft/Lund/Crestliner/Tracker boats.
4.I run my boats in big lakes typically, where the water can go from dead-calm to 3' rollers in a matter of minutes. A bigger V-hull seems like a much better choice than a low-riding jon or modified-V.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, I look forward to your opinions.

Cheers,
Rob

The Lund has always been an excellent boat. They are really the industry standard in durable tinnies. However, now that they are owned by Brunswick, I am not happy. I personally hate Brunswick, and am seeing some lack of quality control. The Lunds are still SWEET! They have all sorts of ingenious thinking. I haven't seen any of the new ones in person, to really judge that particular line on quality control. The Starcrafts didn't make me happy regarding quality control. I felt that they started cutting corners in some of the newer models. Plus, I can't fit behind the console on the 17 foot bass boat, which might give me some bias.

For what you are planning, the Lund Alaskan seems to be a great fit for you. I know of a lot of happy owners with those, and they are a no nonsense boat ready to work.

I think I remember seeing an Alaskan model on here once.... might try doing a search for it

I love my Tracker Magna 19CC, it will most anything and has plenty of storage.

lol.. now what's your beef with Brunswick? #-o Just because they are the parent company of a certain brand does not mean they dictate building practices , nor does it affect the QC of a particular line of boats. that falls on the boat manufacture itself. I built motor yachts for Bayliner in the late 80's /early 90's and I own a bayliner boat now. my Bayliner has served me well in the 6 years i've owned it . the only major issues i've had with it is the engine had to be replaced @ about 20 hours on the clock ..I must admit that I too am looking at deep V aluminum boats and thinking of selling the two I have to get one.

Thanks for the replies guys, sort of has me thinking Alaskan more than ever. Shame they're so damned expensive. I see about 1-2 of these (MAYBE) come up for sale used every year...so that avenue might not actually work. I was fishing yesterday with my father in law, and two of my kids...and MAN, things were more cramped than I would have liked. The boat behaved perfectly, just a case of bumper cars inSIDE the thing! lol

I see their REBEL and PRO-V boats on the water sometimes and I bet they're a treat to fish from. My only concern is all the extra weight those frills add, and how much motor I'd need to push them. (or truck to pull them) Lund's OUTFITTER 1750 looks about right, but aside from the wider beam (which would really help I'm sure) it's only 1-1/2' longer than my boat.

Time to start saving I guess!!
