Hey all. New to the forum, also pretty new to the world of boating and outboard motors. I picked up a pretty old 20 horse motor for next to nothing. Was built by chrysler. Can't find much info based on the model number but after some digging I'm somewhat confident in thinking its a 1968 or 69 Wizard 20 horse. All that aside, I really need some help on getting this motor running. I have fixed the recoil starter but however cannot get it engaged with the flywheel. I think the problem behind that is not being able to get the motor in neutral. Its stuck in forward even though i can get the tiller handle into the 'shift' position. Something is wrong with the shift linkage and I cant figure out what. Right now I have simply been hitting it with a degreaser to rid of the gunk and have been hitting some external bolts and screws with pb blaster so i can change the lower unit oil. I also cannot get the flywheel off. What do yall recommend? not sure exactly what im asking but what are some basic diagnosis tests i can do to try and get this thing to start. spark Plugs are fresh, by the way.

Also, the AMOCI forum may be helpful...

found this.. 1965 is the year Chrysler bought West Bend.... Looks like it will be challenging to find parts... your best bet it AMOCI.. First place to start on any motor is a good exploded parts diagram.... and I could not locate a free one.

Was chrysler the parent company over wizard? The outboard hood is a wizard 20 horse and it fits the motor like a glove. Which lead me to start my search looking at wizard outboards

Wizard was a brand sold by Western Auto stores. They contracted with manufacturers like Mercury and Scott Atwater to market their own line of motors. I can't find any reference to a Chrysler or West Bend manufactured line of their motors though... I suppose it's possible.. and if there was some small scale test run there it might be very interesting to AMOCI people... Try to find someone who's an expert on Wizards:

show some photos of the motor with the hood.

Addit:
Ok I did find some info... Chrysler did make some Wizards starting in 1965:

A wizard hood probably found it's way onto a 65 Chrysler motor as a replacement... (Or visa versa)

That's actually good news on parts, because I doubt Chrysler sold many motors under their own name.... What you need is somebody to confirm that the parts are interchangeable with mid 60's Wizards.

Chrysler did market quite a few motors under their own name for years. They did so until they sold to Bayliner who changed the name to Force.

You'd have to pay me a lot of money to take a Chrysler outboard of any vintage.....

In the later years of Chrysler (marine) they both designed and manufactured their own engines.....and a unique line of boats as well.
They had an engineering test center located in Ft. Pierce, Florida. When I was a test driver for OMC I used to see their test drivers and boats running the same water we did. Our test center, or one of them, was located in Stuart, Fla. about 20 miles South of theirs.
