Hey guys, I'm new to this forum. I have a 1954 evinrude super fastwin, and the seals for the main shaft that the motor pivots on went bad. Does anyone know where I could find replacement seals, or what that shaft would be called?

Really need a much better description than provided.
Are you talking about the steering bracket and shaft?
There are bushings in there that locate the steering shaft inside the pivot bracket (the bracket inside your transom brackets).
I have had a few of these engines so far. What is going on with yours?

Yes I think it is the bracket and shaft. I attached a picture of the shaft so hopefully this will help.

Okay....are you worried about the grease coming out of it at the top?
If so that is normal. Keep greasing it as a matter of fact.
By the way....that engine should be run on no less than a 24:1 mixture and preferably around 16 or 20:1. It is a plain bearing engine and has to have the oil to live. Do not listen to Billy Bob or Bubba at the boat ramp!

I'm pretty sure there is no seal on that shaft. It's made to leak grease when it's full. I'd pump it for a while and then clean up the old grease that's forced out. That's how they used to do it in the old times....

Thanks guys, I am not worried about the grease at the top. There is a plastic ring that is broken in half at the bottom and I can wiggle the motor around and the shaft wiggled inside as well. I'm running a 50:1 mixture and haven't had any issues but I will change things up just to be safe. Thanks again for the help.

The guessing game is finally over at least, so.....that part can be changed and you will definitely know the engine when done. Whether or not the part is available is another story.
I would start by asking in www.aomci.org in the webvertise section. The part you would be looking for should be called a lower steering shaft bushing. Also check and see if someone has a complete midsection for your engine. Should be dirt cheap and a lot less work.

I think the part you're describing is also called an Absorber.... It appears to be just a sheet of rubber around the shaft:
