Hi everyone, working on my used 9.9 and found that some of the foam padding that lines the inside of the cowling had fallen off and was shredded by the flywheel. Doesn’t look like it was sucked into the carb or motor.

Did Johnson put foam padding in the cowling to help with noise or was this something the previous owner might have done?

It is to.help with noise. Mine fell apart and i.left it out. It is louder but i live with that.

I thought about using celotex to replace it but never got to that yet lol

Mine was making fine dust that winds up in the carburetor.

I dont think it woll really hurt anything, but I sprayed the surface with spray glue to stop this.

3M #33 or #77 would work.

My 92 model 9.9/15 has foam but my 3 others that are 70's to mid 80's models do not have any. I honestly can't tell a difference in noise between them.

I landed on dynaliner. Here is where I did my research. It made a huge difference on the 1960s 18s, and I'm planning to put it inside my 1961 Lark 40hp when I get it running as well. As everyone pointed out, you'll need to confirm heat tolerance, adhesion, and just think through what would happen if it were to come unglued from your cowling. In the end, I decided it couldn't be worse than the foam that OMC used (in terms of risk of falling off)... so I tested carefully, and I'm glad I did it.

I knew there was another thread as well. Here it is.
