    honda 40hp

Honda makes a good outboard, and just a little trivia, they have never manufactured a 2 stroke. They have been making outboards since the 60's or so (maybe a little before) and they have all been 4 strokes. Good motors

    MERC 4STROKE OIL

Quicksilver is made by Mercury. For break in use conventional oil, then on the first oil change switch to synthetic if you desire synthetic. Even the manufacturer uses conventional for the 'break in' period. Mercury puts conventional oil in their motors except for the Verado super charged...

Losing fuel pressure only at idle

Rebuild the fuel pump, seen this fix that issue several times over. If you can pump the ball and keep it running at idle but it won't pull enough to do it on its own at low idle it may be the internals are getting mushy. Under more demand it is pulling like it should but lower it is not making...

    water pump woe's

Have you checked to make sure the tube that carries the water from the block to the outlet (pee tube) is clear and not packed up with anything? If not disconnect it at the block and blow some air down and out the tube with a compressor (don't blow back towards the motor) see if that helps any.

    My 1958 trailer make over!

 I laughed, not at your idea or work but at never having seen or even thought of this. Fantastic, just watch that pipe.

    internal cleaning

Never heard the baking soda thing, and I don't think i would do that to my motor personally. What I would say is run it for about 10 to 15 minutes on a hose or in a fresh water lake (still on the trailer on the ramp if you like). Do this after every running in salt water, never let it sit...

    Etec Engines ?

The Etec engine is very reliable like Pappy says. They are peppy and strong, and have lower emissions than most 4 strokes on the market to boot. I would not hesitate getting one. Bufford

    1989 Evinrude 9.9 question

Dump the gas, get fresh. As for carb cleaner, get a can from NAPA or some such parts store and soak the carb but not more than 8 hours, marine carbs have a coating on them it will remove if left long term. Remove all gaskets, jets and plugs possible before soaking it, and if you have a kit...

Engine flooding if it doesn't pull-start on the first try?

Ethanol gas will begin to phase seperate (at the chemical level) in about 15 days and it will draw in moisture from the air. Shaking it won't help that problem but it will mix the water and gas up for a few minutes. Make sure to use marine stabalizer it will help a little longer. Non ethanol...

    Bufford's 12 foot modification

I'm glad you liked it so much, I wish I knew where to start with 'dummy proff' because I'm no brain child I just started with an idea of what I wanted to see and worked my way slowly to it that day. The cutting and fitting was done in a day, its pretty simple and straight forward, the pictures...

    Bufford's 12 foot modification

Thanks Jasper, I appreciate the kind words. I do miss it a lot, and I plan to do another on a 14 or 16 foot boat soon, I am actively looking for a project boat to use. I did get moved, I am living in upstate SC near Clemson University and work on Lake Keowee. I can not begin to explain how...

    Bufford's 12 foot modification

Mine is (was) a riveted hull and it was no problem at all, as a matter of fact it sealed up several that were leaking, between the steelflex and the Durabak inside it never leaked a drop again.

    Stripping old paint vs not!

If you are interested, look in my signature at my 12' flat bottom modification, I did a step by step on the steelflex application about mid way through that thing. You can see how we prepped it and how it went on. I suggest using 2 people. Bufford
