It's a great upgrade if you can find a reasonably priced carb. Take your time searching for one. It's tempting to snag one off ebay but in my experiences they are so overpriced there....prob because so many people fail to take care of their motors and think buying a $500 carb for their motor not worth too much more than that is the best route to take lol.
You can score deals on eBay, but you have to keep at it and know on sight what you’re looking for. Going by the listing title can lead you down the wrong path and only find you the guys who “know what they have”, so to speak.

Learn to visually identify the item you’re looking for and do a basic search. Ie, rather than searching “94 evenrude 15hp carb” just search “OMC carb” and scroll through the results looking for something similar to what you want and weed out the pricy ones looking for the best deal.

Time consuming? Yes, but it beats throwing money at something that is a want vs a need.

I have a 1999 9.9 hp Johnson outboard motor. Can I increase the horsepower to15 hp. By simple replacing the carburetor?
Good morning, just seen your post on 9.9 to 15 conversion. I have 2 thoughts for you. #1 do the research for your particular model, year ( LeeRoys Rambling is a good place to start). #2 look for a donor motor in your area, that is close to the age of your motor. You may find buying a non-running 15hp cheaper than buying just a carb. A donor can also provide you with other parts that are getting hard to find..

This is the way I upgraded mine to a 15hp. One other point, I have found that I most definitely have more power, but that comes at a cost of burning considerably more fuel.

Thx. Definitely things to consider.

Problem has been solved. I’m not going to try to get more h.p. Thx for the input

You guys totally missed Pappy's first post (#3). And yeah, it can be done but you'll never find a 15hp carb at a reasonable price.. I have the same outboard and I've been looking.

If Pappy says the carb swap will work on that engine, I'd go with it!

A lot of the 15 HP carbs will have a bigger throat diameter. Sometimes the intake is of the larger size, sometimes not. So you may have to either bore out or swap the intake on some engines.

But if Pappy says the carb swap will work, I'd go with it!
