According to the original sales brochure, my old Deep C weighs in at 276 lbs. Do y'all think a 1998 20 hp Johnson would be enough horsepower? As long as I could go 25 or so mph I'm happy. Thanks !20 hp Johnson.jpg57DeepC.jpg

20hp isn't going to get you to 25 in my opinion. This is a 15' tank with a lot of displacement.
It's rated for 60hp, for what its worth.
 
Just another quick thought...It might be worthwhile to measure your transom and the '98 Johnson for compatible sizes. It's hard for me to tell the length of the shaft from the pic, but if the boat is dated correctly, it's going to be a short shaft transom. The 20" boat wasn't released until 1958. ...the current 40 hanging on it now looks to be a short shaft, too.
*If you would like to nail down the production year for sure, post up the serial found stamped in the spine of the lower center transom knee brace. I have a copy of the factory paperwork for the old stuff and can date it with accuracy.

Cool Tee Nee trailer, too. Nice rig.

It's definitely a 15" transom, and the motor is a 1963 Johnson 28hp Model RX-11A. Huge for a 28 hp. Thanks for the input.

Wow, that boat would be screaming with a 60 hp.

My previous 15' Mod-V boat came in at 340# dry hull weight. Had a 25 HP Merc four-stroke. WOT = 25 - 26 mph. The power trim really helped. I think it was rated for 40 or 45 HP max.
 
With over 5ft of beam and an average of 27" of freeboard, the C hull is deceptively big.
Transom width and design allows running twins if desired, too.
I own a 1956 model Deep C myself.

I can tell you we typically run vintage 35-40hp engines on the smaller Alumacraft 14' FD models. They perform extremely well with a two person load and normal added load.
A Deep C may do what you want it to do with a 35-40hp engine on it, vintage or not. Always better to be able to throttle back into your desired cruise speed and have some left over........
A good friend is starting the prep work on another version of the Deep C for a vintage V4 75hp. That should cruise very nicely when done.
