    Sealants

I will second that. Has been the go to sealer for those in the know for decades and decades.

    what size motor

Do you enjoy vintage engines on your vintage boat? As has been mentioned there are tons of these Big Twin style engines out there and still going. They are easy to work on and fairly inexpensive to keep running. Starting in 1958 there is a "Super Quiet" version of this engine that is...

    Johnson 15 hp Cuts Out

You're not quite done with it. With an overheat as severe as yours you have probably melted the water tube grommets beneath the powerhead. You never mentioned checking compression either but well worth checking after a bad overheat. The grommets are a different story. the supply tube grommets...

    Primer bulbs

The bigger Yamahas come WITH a primer bulb in the rigging box!!

    Primer bulbs

Realistically I have probably rigged well over 500 pontoons (that number is conservative) in the last several years. Every single one goes out with a new primer bulb on it. Period.

    Primer bulbs

Thought you would have picked up on the answer by now but......the answer is YES, you need a primer. Unless you want to absolutely wear out your starter trying to lift fuel to the carbs with a pump that only works while the crankshaft is turning and producing a vacuum/pressure pulse

    Primer bulbs

A primer bulb does not stop at the fuel pump. It takes the place of the fuel pump and will prime a system all the way to the fuel bowl until the needle and seat closes or will fill a vapor separator tank on an injected engine.

    67 Evinrude 18 modified to a 25 ?

You would be correct. Plus you are effectively adding somewhere around 38% more horsepower and no extra weight. It is a really good and inexpensive modification.

    Vent hole

Let me be the first to roll my eyes then. The comment was made that gear oil was visible or at least what he thinks was gear oil. If the vent plug was out the assembly would have had nothing but water and probably metal shavings in it by now. Possible? Anything is possible. Probable? Nope.

    67 Evinrude 18 modified to a 25 ?

With that engine you can literally bolt on a 25hp complete powerhead and go.

    Vent hole

check the simple things first how about it? Right off the bat folks are assuming you are correct in your diagnosis. That may lead to an unnecessary and expensive repair. Any vent hole in the mid-section/lower unit area is there to purge water so that freeze damage does not occur. It is fairly...

    Cable/pulley steering vs rotary ?

OEM pulleys are still available. I see them on Ebay quite often. I just bought some for the G3 project recently. You are correct on the number of pulleys you need. Rivets can be drilled out and replaced or thru-bolted.

    Cable/pulley steering vs rotary ?

Your marina would not touch it because they probably have no clue about it. I currently run both styles in my boats. My older boats (like yours) run cable. I run it up to and including my 1960 Glaspar G3 with a 1960 Evinrude 75hp V4. Plenty reliable enough for twin set-ups as well. These cable...

    Short shaft/long shaft

Is there a transducer or anything on the bottom of the boat anywhere ahead of the lower unit. Got a picture of the transom area? Shoot a picture of the side of your gearcase as well. You can have a thermostat packed with whatever and that will not burn up a pump. As long as the pump is pumping...

fuel line keep falling off my 2000 25hp Evinrude

What brand fitting did you purchase? Rough running at low idle in gear is usually an overly rich mixture. That engine has an idle mixture adjustment. Lean it out around 1/8 - 1/4 turn at a time and let it stabilize for about 30 seconds before another adjustment. Lean it until the engine sneezes...

    Evinrude 30hp, another poor decision?

First off.....definitely not an ignition coil. I really doubt the gasket failed. Highly unlikely is an understatement. You need another mechanic. After not running for so long I would disassemble the carb and do a thorough cleaning and install a new OEM kit. That carburetor has a fuel mixture...

    '89 Evinrude 70 hp, maybe

Well, OMC changed the transom brackets and trim system around 1986 - 1988 or so. You can look up those parts and that should give you a ballpark idea. Basically that engine was a mature engine platform anyway and there are millions of parts out there for them that will fit. The cylinder and...
