    Splicing different gauge wires

Reread what it says. "Sole means of mechanical connection." Take two wires. Lay them side by side. Flow solder between both of them. Take two wires. Lay them end to end. Flow solder between both of them. That is what "sole means of mechanical connection" means. Now take two wires. Twist them...

    Splicing different gauge wires

Optionally, they do sell "Step Down" butt splices. They aren't particularly common, however. For example, this one [link] accepts 14-16 on one side, and 18-22 on the other, and this one [link] accepts 10-12 on one side, and 14-16 on the other. I ordered a few for my upcoming trailer rewire. :)

    Transducer placement?

I've been researching transducer placement, getting ready to install one on my boat. I came across this page: https://www.sternmate.com/Where.html

    Watching Alaska reality shows

I've seen every episode! Jessie has definitely improved his setup. I'm torn on whether he's a good fit for the show, though. He doesn't really do subsistence living like the rest of the people they follow. He drives a truck, lives along a road, has power lines running right past his property...

Old 2 stroke fuel tank for new 4 stroke

When I bought my boat, the guy told me he ran 50:1, even though the big stickers on both the fuel tank and the engine say 100:1. He used gas with ethanol, and some enzyme treatment. I wanted to get rid of the fuel that was in the tank. I used the 50:1 all summer in my lawnmower without any...

    Watching Alaska reality shows

We watch Life Below Zero. In the beginning, the Hailstones had a beat up boat with a borrowed motor. They made it work, though. Now they have the same rickety ol' boat, but with a nice, newer motor. It's a 60hp Yamaha, I think. On last week's episode, Jessie made a ridiculous raft by bolting...

    My new (semi-)portable sonar/GPS

Thanks! The Simrad bracket is just a plastic U. It allows you to tilt the screen only. There isn't a quick disconnect, or else I probably would have skipped the box, and mounted it to the boat. The bracket on my setup is screwed to the mounting plate that is part of the Johnny Ray mount. I...

    My new (semi-)portable sonar/GPS

After six months of boating without knowing the water depth, I finally bought a sonar unit. Since I live in the city and keep my boat outside, it is important that the unit is easily removable from the boat when not in use. This is what I came up with: The unit is capable of easily rotating...

    Princecraft Yukon 15

Very nice! I am considering the exact same setup. Thank you for posting pictures of the oar lock mounts. I think it sealed the deal for me. I think I am going to order a 4-pack w/ bases, and the oar lock mounts. I'll put two mounts on the corner plates, like yours. I plan to mount two more to...

    Running at altitude?

    The rule of thumb that I have read is 3% reduction in horsepower for every 1,000 ft in altitude. Sea Level - 10hp 1,000 - 9.7hp 2,000 - 9.4hp 3,000 - 9.1hp 4,000 - 8.8hp 5,000 - 8.5hp 6,000 - 8.2hp ...etc. I'm sure the differences could be measured, but not sure where someone would notice a...

    Be careful out there

My wife shared this video with me this morning. https://youtu.be/vhsYPVEinBE?t=16s Now there is a good reminder to be heads-up at all times. Be careful out there!

Evaluating Humminbird vs Garmin Fish Finder/GPS

I bet they say there is no dedicated down-imaging element. This is the transducer that is included: https://www.humminbird.com/Products/XNT-9-SI-180-T/ If you look through the rest of their transducers, those that have down imaging specifically list it...

Evaluating Humminbird vs Garmin Fish Finder/GPS

The STRIKER Plus 7sv does have wifi, and it looks like backing up your data is possible with the free Active Captain app. https://explore.garmin.com/en-US/active-captain/ Not sure if you can backup your data without sharing it with the community, though.

    Battery disconnect switch

Does this link work for you? https://www.mouser.com/Electromechanical/Switches/Pushbutton-Switches/_/N-5g30Z1yzvvqx?P=1z0x8h3&Ns=Pricing|0 20 amp push button, in stock, sorted by price. Read the datasheets to ensure it will work for you. Shipping should be $5. Also, it is pretty easy to make...

    Battery disconnect switch

Did you post a picture of the current switch that I am missing? What is the current requirement? Do you need the switch to be sealed or not? Also, does it really have to be a pushbutton? The rectangular switches from ezacdc, for example, are rocker switches, not pushbuttons. You will find that...

Evaluating Humminbird vs Garmin Fish Finder/GPS

Garmin prevailed: https://newsroom.garmin.com/press-release/featured-releases/garmin-prevails-navico-patent-dispute Whether or not they have changed the included transducer with their units will take some research. My guess is that the Striker Plus series is more likely to have the down-facing...

Opinions on an Alweld that popped up

Is that a long shaft motor on a short transom boat, or is that just perspective? BTW, the specs of your bumper hitch are likely imprinted on the bumper, somewhere near the hitch.

Anyone w/ Simrad/Lowrance unit who can measure something?

In case anyone needs to know this in the future, for planning purposes... For the Simrad Go7 XSE (and should be several Lowrance models), the power wire is 9/32 in diameter. The individual red and black conductors appear to be 16 gauge. The yellow and blue conductors appear to be 18 gauge. The...

    GPS Plotter vs Chartplotter

I have virtually no experience, but just did a ton of research before ordering my unit. The Hook2-7 doesn't have any built-in maps. The description doesn't mention any mapping, and there are no variations of the same unit available with different mapping. It will basically track where you went...

Anyone w/ Simrad/Lowrance unit who can measure something?

Shot in the dark here. Does anyone here have a Simrad GO# XSE or Lowrance TI 7 or higher, and a set of digital calipers? I need to know the diameter of the 4-wire power cable. My new GO7 XSE won't be here until after the weekend. I need to order a wire seal that fits the power cable. Knowing...
