Thoughts on what would cause a headgasket to fail like this?

Did exactly this at a local engine machine shop. He confirmed it was pretty warped, but got it back to good. Planning to clean up the other surfaces and reinstall everything with new gaskets this weekend and see where we stand. Thanks for all the guidance!

Thoughts on what would cause a headgasket to fail like this?

Makes sense. Thanks for that! Had a few minutes to put a straight edge on it last night, but the lighting was crappy and I was in a hurry. It does look like there's some space between the edge and the cylinder mating surface on the head, especially in that area. It also looks like the...

Thoughts on what would cause a headgasket to fail like this?

Pappy, thanks for the reply. I mean, the obvious answer is that the gasket material outside the fire ring is missing and eaten away by combustion gas (and the paper towel is showing, where it shouldn't be). I guess what I was asking was what was the order of events to this failure--gases...

Thoughts on what would cause a headgasket to fail like this?

Motor died on a recent trip--lost power quickly from cruise speed then stopped and wouldn't restart. Got it to run for a bit with some with throttle on muffs in the driveway, and noticed exhaust out of the tell tale. Did a compression test and top hole (2 cylinder 2 stroke) was down to 30psi...

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

Finally. But while we're at it, I do have to point out the irony of you giving me crap over damaging a carb jet. I damaged it, not snapped it off as you claim. I think you're confusing that with one of your first posts here where you snapped off a bolt trying to perform some basic maintenance...

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

Thanks for all of this info! I did sync both the carbs and timing linkages according to the manual the first reply provided. Also, yes, checked TDC for sure! As to the CDI, I don't doubt what you're saying, but what else can I say? I put the multimeter to it per the manual and every...

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

You, sir, have contributed absolutely nothing to this thread beyond insults and negativity. Well, except for your vast knowledge of trash cans as the overarching solution to all of life's problems. It's not appreciated, and to be blunt, I'm a bit surprised that your actions and tone are...

Because I hadn't ordered it yet, Columbo. But if it's more fun from your perspective---you busted me. As to the manual, you dismissed it as valid when it pointed me to the coil and CDI, but wanted me to follow it to the letter when you THOUGHT it said to go to the lake (it doesn't, and you can...

As an update and to provide some closure.... Pulled the carbs apart again, cleaned them again, focused on the idle jets and passages again. Drove the hour to the nearest quiet ramp with a dock so I wasn't using my trash can. Ran the boat to warm it up. Tied it to the dock and went through...

Great idea--not sure why it didn't occur to me to do that.

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

Good stuff. Thank you. Luckily my setup stays pretty full when I put it in gear, but I see how it could be an issue. I just need to get it to a point it's not shaking my fillings out before I clock out on a weekday and drive all the way to the nearest quiet ramp with a dock. Haven't had time...

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

Advice just like NC Cat? You mean that my whole issue is because I'm using a trash can? That I clearly stated it was doing the exact same thing on the water BEFORE the trash can ever came into the picture? I appreciate the thought, but I really don't see the connection--it came across as...

Completely agree. The one downside to tuning at home, though, is the beer cans are still in the yard the next morning after you throw them overboard. KIDDING.

If I didn't want input, I wouldn't have asked. But if you're really that mad about me giving as good as I got about the trash can sideshow, it's probably time to move along. Besides, that advice was about the last 2% of this process.... we're a long way from there. If not, I welcome your ideas.

I think you'll note I've been very appreciative of the solid advice I've received this far, and only a bit prickly to those that came in hot on assumptions and preconceived notions. That said, your snideness isn't exactly welcomed either. If you want to join the discussion, jump in and I'll be...

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

I use a hose clamped to the side, sorta like I imagine most folks would in a similar situation. In any measure, I don't think a few inches of water would mean the difference between a bucking motor and a butter smooth idle. I promise when I get it close I'll take and tie it to the dock for...

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

As an update, went through the timing and throttle linkage setup per the manual. Timing was close, but not quite there. Linkages were micky-moused and pretty far off. Thinking previous owner or his cut rate "tech" tried to adjust away a deeper issue. Also pulled the coils and CDI and put a...

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

I would argue that a trashcan filled close to the water line would be pretty dang close to being "on the water" from the perspective of idling, my friend. Only the low-speed circuit is adjustable on this motor--and high speed works fine. That trash can looks a lot like a "test tank" that the...

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

Such great information, thanks! Those manuals are worth their weight in gold, I will put them to good use. My only question would be--if it's a clogged idle circuit, why would the cylinders look overly rich? Wouldn't an obstructed circuit starve the engine of fuel and present as a lean...

Need help--older Mariner 40EL rough idle with bad shaking in gear

So I have a 1982 Merc Mariner 40EL, verified by serial number--it's a tough motor to track down service specs on, as the service manual doesn't really cover the carb or the waste spark ignition system in the specs, along with other topics. The motor ran and idled when purchased and on the first...
