Picking up a new project tomorrow morning. Had gave up on purchasing a boat after having multiple deals fall apart due to some shady sellers. Decided to browse marketplace a final time and came across a old and tattered Starcraft Seafarer that's overpowered with a 40hp Evinrude. Plan is to sell the 40 (unless it's not as overpowered as I think) and pick up a 70's OMC 25. The boats a mess, but, the motor looks good under the hood. Especially, for the price lol.

1998 is a good year for those motors. What's with all the Rustoleum rust primer sprayed on everything??? I'd be using some carb cleaner to wipe all that stuff off.

14'?

My 16' mariner is rated for 50 HP. A 30 seems good for yours, and won't weigh as much. I put a 30 on a similar boat a few weeks ago, and it ran great:

Not sure why they "ducked" the motor lol. I agree that a 30 is a better match for this hull. Honestly a old omc 25 is what I'm hoping to come across.

Cool project! I look forward to seeing the build out. Others have mentioned that the HP rating on the tag is more of a suggestion. My Seafarer is tagged at 35 HP and I'm running the original 20, which is fine for my needs. If the extra weight of the 40 isn't an issue and she's running good, I would personally keep it on there.

Good point, especially if you have a 20" transom. My Princecraft was rated for 30 HP and 6 people, and after raising the transom to 20", I strapped a 50 on it, and it's an excellent match. She feels "right" with that HP. The old Evinrude 35 always felt anemic unless I was alone.

It already has the 40, so run her and see how she feels. Might be just right.

Oh, and by the way, the 50 actually burns LESS fuel than the 35 did when I had others with me. I don't have to keep the throttle pinned anymore.

The 35 would struggle to get over 20 at WOT when the kids were with me and WOT all day drinks fuel. The 50 pops up on plane instantly and cruises at 25, sipping gas, engine smooth and quiet.

Yeah, it's the right fit for this boat. You just might find out that 40 is the same for yours.

I'm a heavy guy approximately 275. My fishing pals are all above 225. May need the extra umph lol. Started tear down today. Got the floor, styrafoam, and "custom" decking out. Still have a few bits attached like the framing for the deck and bench seat top. I honestly wonder if the floor isn't factory. It's got a support that runs bow to stern down the center line. It looks too good to be a diy job. It was also pop riveted in. Surprisingly the foam wasn't too bad. 1 spot from mice, I'll cut that out replace and reuse it. The pieces were like 8' by 10", and shaped to the floor. Another reason why I wonder about it, It had a big cap on to the bow that has been cut back. Why someone does that is beyond me? Boats 14' and some change X 62'', but sort of flairs inward up at the gunnels.

If the transom wood is solid...that should handle the 40 without a problem....three nice strong knees to suport that transom. Just becausevthe motor is big, doesnt mean you have to run it wot...

Just finished up raising my transom to 21” on my 67 seafarer 14’…got a 2014 Yamaha 25hp on it and a new on the fly jackplate. Made the transom out of a 2x12 LVL epoxy coated7E6AC96B-E7CE-4637-83AC-B6472CEE986D.jpeg

Got everything out except for the "wall outlets" lol. Only good wood in the boat has been the transom thus far.

Highly recommend gluvit on the inside to seal any small leaks and tighten up the floor since you are already stripped down

First coat of white rolled and tipped on the side walls.

Wow. Great paint job. I think I'll duplicate the color scheme when I paint mine. Thanks for taking the time to post the pics.

I originally left the rails white, but, for whatever reason it just didn't look right. When I was spraying the inside I decided to test out a side with the safety blue and It just worked. The USA scheme was totally a coincidence lol

I just picked up a 1963 Seafarer 14 footer and my label says 40 HP max
