Hello,

Purchased an old boat with a 2 stroke, 50 hp '73 Evinrude with electric shift on the back of it. Did some work to it myself because the motor did not want to stay running. Changed ignition coils, Starting solenoid, spark plugs, cleaned carbs, adjusted linkages and put a new impeller in the bottom. The boat runs absolutely amazing with muffs in the driveway. Forward and reverse gears work as the prop turns. The motor just screams when given throttle with muffs.

Here's the problem...finally got it in the water, turn key, starts and runs great. Put in forward gear however and it has nothing for power moving forward. The boat does move but the back end hardly drops in the water. The motor doesn't "scream" and almost seems to struggle a bit. Put it back in neutral and the throttle is there again. Definitely didn't break any speed records.

Becoming desperate for help here. The family looking at me for some water fun before summers up.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Thank you.

First off the reason it "screams" on the muff is it is running without a load. BAD idea, shouldn't do that. You need to adjust you carbs and see if it does better if not most likely you didn't get them totally cleaned. That is if you have them properly linked up and they are opening up in a synchronized manner.
