my friend has 2000 mercury 50hp bigfoot 4 stroke that loses power after ran for approx 20 mins.

today it started right up off the trailer, idled fine and ran like a scalded dog for 15 minutes. we stopped to fish for about 1 hour.
started right back up took off and got up to almost full throttle and after 5 mins.it started losing power and died. when we eventually got it started it would only max out @ about 2000 rpm. and that was using the idle lever. when it does start, seems like it cranks excessively and sounds like its loading up. we checked basic things and found hose bulb looked like it was collapsed. removed tank cap and bulb re-expanded. the vent on the tank was open. it got to the point to where it wouldn't idle so you could get it into gear.
it has a new 6 gallon portable tank with new hose/bulb combo. shop went thru the motor this winter knowing the previous owner had the same issue. they've ran the motor couple of times and have not duplicated this issue, this is the second time out with the boat and has done it both times.
wondered if anyone has run into this.
need ideas on what might be causing this...fuel starvation, weak spark?

First things first.
Check compression!!!!!
From the sound of it you guys may have stuck a piston running lean from the fuel starvation.

i can see that happening on a 2 stroke...but a 4 stroke?
it turns over fine.. its not seized.
