i just bought a motorguide varimax 45lb thrust. do i need a circuit breaker if im using the stock wires? what are the advantages?

Advantages? Well, maybe keeping the motor from burning up if you get a short. The breakers are not real cheap but cost less that a new trolling motor.
 
You can also reset a circuit breaker if it trips.Usually they trip if the prop gets fowled or you hit something and it slows down or stops the prop from spinning.
 
I'd call it cheap insurance but maybe I'm not using the right one?
Mine only costs $10....shipped here.

Have a rubber boot that fits over the top of it so it doesn't get wet.
 
I'm using one like this. resetable so you will not have to replace it if it trips.
I have two of this style, one for my feed and one for the trolling motor.

im looking at the 2nd to last one the Bussman 'Short Stop' Manual Reset Type 3 Circuit Breaker
 
The Short Stop should be fine. Any is beeter than nothing as long as the amperage isn't too high for what you are trying to protect. If you have the manual on your motor, it should state someplace what it should be fused at.
