Checked the LU oil in my 60 Merc today after repairs to make sure it was staying full. Little milky but not bad, there was probably some water inside it still and it will take a few changes to get it all out.

Anyway, the drain gasket tore and I don't have a spare. Anyone know if you can get a nylon or paper washer from Ace or an auto parts store? There are no Mercury dealers close to me, and I wanted to go fishing tomorrow.

I know Ace has an assortment of nylon washers, but I don't know if that's an acceptable substitute.

Cork would be better if they have those

I don't know if I trust cork on a threaded fastener.

I found a couple nylon washers at Ace. They're a little big on the OD, might take some whittling to make them fit, but I think they'll work.

You do know that mercury seals (blue ones) are cork with a lock tight coating on them right.

Looked like paper to me, but I could be wrong. Sure wouldn't be the first time.
