To make a long story shorter, my father just gave me a 1987 Landau Handler. It is actually a gift for my 2 year old son. It is in ROUGH shape, and as a boat-repair novice, I'm going to call on your expertise in this project. Photos are included.
My plan is remove and replace all the wood. The floor is rotten and smells like old-bad gas. I don't know if it's from a spill or a leaky tank, but I guess I'm going to find out. The boat has been left out in the rain for years, so there's no wonder the flooring is rotten.
From what I've been told, the Johnson 28 HP outboard was still running well and with no issues when it was last used.
Let's get this project started! First things first. The weather has to clear up so that I can get all of this wood out of it.

I agree with Jim. Take out all the bad stuff and then put it back together. It really is a nice boat. I like the side console. I also note the trailer looks very sturdy. Are you planning on keeping it in the original configuration?

I've gotten most of the wood (that isn't the bottom decking) removed. I'm going to save the wood that I can to use as a template for replacements.
My plan is to take everything out, clean and paint the boat, inside and out, and then start with the restoration.I'm going to replace the lights with LEDs, and may need to replace the console. When I was unscrewing it from the deck, it felt brittle.
When I figure out how the boat drains, I'll have a more concrete plan on decking, but for now, I'm considering cedar planking in the bottom. We'll see how that plays out, though.
Any suggestions on removing the old rotten carpeting and adhesive that's stuck to the aluminum?

As for the configuration, I think I'll keep it the way it is. I may have to replace the console but will still have it mounted to the side. Being so new to this, I don't want to bite off more than I can chew, too early.

When I get the hull off the trailer, I think I'm going to give it a good cleaning, too. I plan to repaint and rewire it with LEDs and replace the boards and rollers (not sure what they're actually called). The PVC pipe if going to have to go, too. The rope on the winch is in pretty bad shape and all the chains are rusted, so they'll be replaced.

I made some headway today. I took the deck and foam out of the boat. As you can see in the pictures, I had to take the bottom decking out with a shovel.
Also, the foam was waterlogged. The foam in the bow and stern of the boat was spray foam and had expanded into the drainage channels on the deck and held water from making it to the drain hole/non-functioning bilge pump.
There was.good news, though. The console wasn't in bad shape at all and just needs some fiberglass work to patch all the holes that had been drilled in it.
Fun fact, the completely rotten deck had been screwed down with drywall screws.
I have a few questions.
1. What is the best way to get spray foam out of very hard to reach places? Is there something that will dissolve it?
2. How do you disconnect the steering cable from an outboard? I'll take a photo when I get a chance.
3. Suggestions for something to remove old adhesive from aluminium? The carper peeled off with little effort, but it left the dry adhesive.
Thanks in advance for any tips or guidance.

Edit: Sorry for the pictures. They're in reverse order and sideways. I'll try to fix it next time.

I'm a keep it simple/keep it light kind of guy. I'd take the wood out and leave it out, save the side console and strap the gas cans, and battery down.

You do what works best for you, I'm not too handy and with a bad back I don't want to do that kind of work once, let alone maybe again in 20 years.

Either way, get her out on the water with your boy and make some memories.

Has anyone ever used Trex decking for a boat? It's the composite decking that many people use for home decks.

Another day of work down.
I built a platform to put the boat on.
The outboard and helm/console are off the boat.
The boat is off the trailer.
The trailer looks sound.
All in all, a good day.

Making nice progress on the boat! Interested to see what direction you go with the floor.

I did a little more work today. I removed the wiring from the boat and some more of the foam. It was still wet at the bottom and was falling apart to the touch.
I also took three, yes THREE transducers off the stern. Now I have a million holes to fill/patch.
I also started taking everything off the trailer. I'll be prepping it for repainting soon. I'm going to rewire it with LED lights and replace the rollers and bunks.
Progress is being made.

This is what I'm thinking for the decking/layout concept. Thoughts? I'll need to add some support but I think it'll work.

No new pictures to share. I've started breaking down the trailer and cleaning out the adhesive on the boat. ZEP cleaner and paint scrapers are time consuming, but I'm making progress.
Does anyone have any recommendations on a good place to get replacement rollers for keel and guide-ons? The mounts look in serviceable condition, but the actual rollers need replacing.
