Id start by giving her some seafoam and making sure the carb is clean. (sounds like it might have been sitting a while) Second id make sure your kill switch isn't sticking. you can do that by disconnecting it and make sure you have spark. A new spark plug never hurts

Turns out it pretty much is. The fella who made it used to work for evinrude back in the day. Then started making his own motors. We'll see how it runs once I get it fixed up.

Ill ask a more simple question. Once the CDI goes out, is it out for good?

Id imagine its gravity fed so probably not. You could try hooking a fuel line from the carb to a gas can and see if it has a strong enough diaphram pump to work. I know nothing about the motor, just speaking in general terms to the norm.
