I have a 1980 monark 1644 I recently bought. The previous owner had put new floors and carpet in and painted it with epoxy paint.. I added a marine radio and relocated the battery. Also put in a new helm and steering cable. I took it to the shop and had carbs cleaned and the guy told me my motor is to big for the boat. Has a 50hp yamaha on it. I looked and can't find a capacity plate anywhere. I beleive it is a 1644P but not sure. Anyone have the info I need to have a new capacity plate made? I want to he sure me and my boys safe. Any help would be greatly apperciated.20190527_061251.jpg

I run a 25hp Mariner/Yamaha on a 1436 jon and is a bit over powered too. How does it float? How does it handle? Does it feel safe? Since it's not a tiller boat you can run a bit higher HP.
If your ok with it don't worry about it.

Thanks. I'm hoping to get it out next weekend and open it up. Haven't had it out since the carbs have been cleaned

Boat looks great for being almost 40 years old.

I can't help you with the capacity plate. Under the Motors forum there is a sticky that contains a step-by-step for estimating the maximum HP for your boat. Might be interesting just to see what it comes up with.

Thank you. I've used a formula thst is on the internet and it says 30hp is the max. But I found a site that has all boats and max hp and it says 55hp.

I took my boat out yesterday and it did great. I think the 50hp yamaha is the right motor for this boat. I tried to post a video but it won't let me.

I have a 1980 Monark 16 ft 1644F bass boat which I am the original owner. The capacity plate reads Maximum Horsepowe 70. I hope this helps. Joe

I realize this is a very old thread, but I just bought a '78 MonArk 1644P last month and have been working on it. In looking for information about it, and joining this site today, I ran across this thread.

Mine has a 1979 Johnson 55 on it which looks to be OEM. According to the data plate, that's the max capacity. It's worn but still legible.
