Mercontrol Unit trouble

I have an older Mercury outboard with the 2 lever Mercontrol unit. I don't know if this is right or not, but I have to pull the throttle lever toward me for forward, and away from me for reverse. It is a 1971 unit, I can't seem to find any info, so I decided to ask the experts :beer:

I have a '74. Post pics and what exactly do you want to know. I've ripped mine apart numerous times and know it pretty well. Mine is push forward for forward and back for reverse. It does not go side to side. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

Just speculating here. Is it possible that the unit was designed to be mounted on....say...the Right side of a center console...and you have it mounted on the left side of the console, or the boat?

I'd assume one could reverse the cables inside to reverse what happens...but...I don't really know that. R
