No pictures, but here is a rough drawing. However, if your hatches were going to be plywood (my example was how I did mine, which are framed with aluminum tubing), I would suggest putting a border of a hardwood (think oak) around the lid, with biscuits and titebond III wood glue, then attach your hinges to that. Edge screwing into the ply won't hold long.
I did a customers boat that way but I used 3/4 ply and predrilled the holes.I also use a little 2 part epoxy on the screws.It comes in a syringe looking deal at most auto parts stores.The way pictured will keep thieves from unscrewing your hatches and steeling your gear.
I wasnt worried about safty or looks, I wanted strength. Mine is just extra storage space, its not a dry box and isnt recessed. I also wanted it to rest as low to the original deck as possible.
