Does anyone know of some device that will let me hook up a smartphone or ipod to a set of marine speakers without using a radio? I have no need for a radio nor do I want to deal with having to mount one somewhere.

You can just use a amplifier. Use a 3.5mm jack to rca and will have to put in a toggle switch for trigger voltage to turn on amp. Your volume will work on your phone but be very touchy, due to using head phone output into line level inputs on amp.

You other option would be use a blue tooth receiver with amplifier and volume control. Would not have to hook phone up to unit them. just keep it within 50' of receiver. You would have to use switch for powering up amp and blue tooth receiver. Plus bluetooth receiver would need a 12v to 5v adapter plug.

Can you link me to each of these so I can look at them?

Here's Bluetooth reciever.
It does have a battery in it also for about 2 hrs. of use without plugging it in.

The amplifier could be any type used in car audio.
Here's link to volume that could be used:

I did find a 12v blue tooth receiver also. but would need a female 3.5mm to rca adapter to hook to amp

So to use a car amp all I need is a RCA to 3.5mm adapter. What is the issue with only using the phone for the volume control? I'd really like to keep this as simple and compact as possible I'm going to be running it off only deep cycle battery's so I'm alittle skeptical as to weather ill get enough runtime for it to be useful anyhow...

The output of phone adjustment would not go far before over drive amp and cause distortion. You would use the about the 0-1/2 on volume on phone. 1/2 would be around full volume. Make sure gain is all way down on amplifier you will have the most control before distortion.

You could use a similar setup to this.

That would work perfect, just like I was talking about. never knew they made a kit with all products. be alot more affordable.

Just letting you know that you can get this cheaper through amazon.

Check out HD & Ryobi cordless tools, they have a radio that uses the 18v power pacs and has the mini jack to hook an ipod or phone up to play music. I use one in the boat all the time, the battery will last all day for me using just the radio. Much easier, might be a few more $$ considering you have to buy a batt and charger as well, but for $100, you got tunes in the boat and its EASY.

Check this puppy out: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002N2LCQE/ref=s9_simh_gw_p422_d16_g422_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1134G55MQFFZ4TY5ZFD0&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846

All you need and it's waterproof to boot!
