Trolling motor question

I found a great deal on a Minn Kota 40 lb thrust, 48 " shaft, foot controlled motor I'm hoping to get to mount to the bow of my 14 ft Monark. My concern is the 48" shaft. Is that too long? I havnt broken out the tape measure yet, but I think a 48 " shaft trolling motor will be lower in the water than my 15 hp Merc. I have zero experience with foot controlled TM's. Can I adjust the depth it sits in the water?
