    welding along keel or chine

My boat is a deep v hull that was made in a press from one piece of aluminum. When i restore it, i will have a choice of one long center weld or two long waterline welds. I could also use solid rivots. The boat will be in salt water. was your jon boat in saltwater? Why would your boat corrode...

i am wanting to find out if it is perferable to weld one long seam from bow to stern or two boat length welds on both chines. ( so as to have a solid center for a boat bottom) which is better from a stress standpoint? the aluminum will be 3/16 5086 or 1/8. not sure yet. boat is 19' thank...

    heat treating to remove dents

thanks for response. ya i know aluminum is difficult. I thought about leaving it alone but decided to restore the boat. Effort, time and frustration are not a factor to me. If they can land a rover on mars then i should be able to fix dents in my tin can. I dont know yet the best method. I...

    heat treating to remove dents

I have a old 19' aluminum boat made of 6061 alloy. This is a heat treatable alloy unlike 5052 or 5061. I want to push out dents the best way possible. One thing that confuses me is that i have read that applying heat to the aluminum will ruin the strength of the metal. --- but if it's heat...

    appleby 14f

having the ability to remove the deck is a good idea in such a small boat. If i were to put plywood in my appleby i would use 1/2 and coat all sides with epoxy resin so it will never rot. I also discovered a product called coosa board, it is strong, light weight and waterproof. ( it is foam...

    Rivets

Most hull rivets are 3/16 solid. I would call starcraft. Also-- google a solid rivot supply store and see what type of rivet head style they used on your boat. Alot of times people will use the next larger size rivet if the origional hole gets damaged during repair. the rivot should be coated...

i had a 10 hp on mine and it moved right along. a 15 hp would be great but i dont know in terms of mph it would be. You wouldnt want more then that though. Read some posts on line x or rhino lining. Some people like it and others don't recomend it. -------bill11

316 stainless or aluminum hardware question

I have read that unlike metals need a barrier between them to prevent corosion. Aluminum hardware is most likely a different alloy then the boat. That being the case is one metal any more desireable ( aluminum vs stainless) or is it always better to use any aluminum whenever possible? -----...

    Sandblasting your tin???

blasting is the way to go as long as you use the correct media. soda blasting is the most popular. you can take the finish off of a soda can without damaging the can so dont worry about the boat. you air compressor needs to have at least 16 cfm to be effecient. bill
