Finally getting a new (to me) tin boat, a 1436

I haven't visited this thread in a while, but I thought I would post an update since I don't have this boat anymore. I lost my job last Fall (again!) and since I wanted a larger boat anyway, it was the first thing I put up for sale. I sold it to a semi-retired couple that live in a community...

    Decking-When and when not to.

Personal preference and fishability based on your style of fishing. A bass fisherman likes to have a high deck because of the techniques used. Crappie fishermen and catfishermen for example, I'd say it probably doesn't matter as much except for storage as you mentioned.

For small waters, I'd say it would be pretty good and I would personally deck it out bench high. Some would say no, however. If you can find a 48" bottom one, go that route. If you can get a 16 footer with a 48" bottom, even better. Honest, you can run out of room real quick.

What is your ideal size/brand bass boat/motor for around $5k

Outdoorsman, I could not possibly agree with you more. She read this and it made her blush.

I understand what you mean, and appreciate the input. I agree that sticking with 60 would probably be best, and there does seem to be some out there. I even found a couple 17' G3 boats with 60hp on them.

Thanks for the feedback y'all. I'm starting to see what's available on Craigslist, and then figuring it should be $1k or so cheaper in the off season.

Thinking of starting a Jon Boat Club in Raleigh, NC

I'd need to see what Charles thinks, but I'd be willing to do a Harris tournament next year, if you promise you would help us recruit some folks to participate 8)

Thinking of starting a Jon Boat Club in Raleigh, NC

If you guys don't get anything going, let us know. If we determine there is enough interest, I think we'd consider having some tournaments in the Triangle area. We were originally going to be in both the Triangle and Triad, but thought it might be too expansive of an area for a tournament...

I ended up doing something along these lines, and it worked great. That thing is solid as stone now, what a difference. Thanks y'all.

Yeah, I'm sure I'll sell my little boat when the time comes, and I would give anyone here a better deal than just anyone. I'll probably shed a tear over this boat going, I've gotten rather attached to it. But yeah it gets a little cramped with 2 people. My 5' tall wife isn't so bad, but two...

Sweet looking boat but I don't need a jet motor. Good to know there are nice rigs out there like that in my price range. Jamie, I agree.. I'll be probably looking either late Fall when people are thinking more about deer than bass. I like to kick tires for a long time so I know what I'm...

Now that the wife is my tournament partner, she wants me to upgrade this Fall/Winter  I'm very thankful for my boat but a bigger one would be sweet. My budget will probably be no more than $5k, and I'm not looking to have to do a lot of mods, at least at first. As long as it is ready...

Finally getting a new (to me) tin boat, a 1436

Hi all, it's been a while. Need an idea to reinforce my trolling motor bracket. The design is fine still but I need to secure it to the port side top rail. I thought the wood to wood L-brackets securing the right side of it to the deck, plus the nut/bolt and screw up front would be enough...

    Decking-When and when not to.

Now that I've beeen using my decked 1436 extensively all Spring, I feel like I can comment here. My boat isn't decked to the top, but I do have a front casting deck on top of the bench seats. At first it would scare me to move around in it, but with a little bit of time, it got a lot easier...

Thanks! Yep, I got a 75 gallon cooler rigged up with a typical bilge pump, hose and PVC pipe with holes in it setup. It works well, but after this past weekend I'm wondering if I shouldn't have gone with a bigger one. If you get a good sack of fish going, it can fill up pretty quick. EDIT...
