1973 Johnson 50hp gearcase: detent spring and balls?

Hi all, here’s my engine… 1973 Johnson 50hp, long shaft, electric start Manual shift with hydraulic shift assist pump (as far as I can tell) As I disassembled the gearcase, I was expecting to find some detent springs and balls, but there’s weren’t any in there. I don’t really trust what was...

Evinrude Big Twin: runs on choke only

Thanks Pappy. The debris was more sludgy and brown than synthetic and black. I checked the fuel pump today even though it was rebuilt and the diaphragm was replaced in October (I agree it made sense given all the dirt I found today). Everything was clean in the pump. I still need to get it...

All good. Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to stay focused on the fuel.

Evinrude Big Twin: runs on choke only

Thanks again to both of you; it's nice to know you're out there trying to help me get this one put to rest. I looked through marine engine.com, my manuals, and some photos. Looks like I do have the 61 carb, so at least it's matched and I was looking at the right schematics, etc. I pulled it...

Evinrude Big Twin: runs on choke only

Hi everyone - an update. . The idle mix needle washers are all fully compressed. . Idle mix needle out 1 turn to 4-1/2 turns (1/4 turn at a time, run on choke for 15 to 20 seconds before trying to open the choke) didn't do the trick. . Tomorrow I'll remove the starter, remove the carb, confirm...

Onthewater102, did you see anything in the reed / intake photos that looked off?

Evinrude Big Twin: runs on choke only

Thanks Pappy for the questions. I replaced both plugs, and the photos show my idle circuit holes were clear at the time of initial rebuild (3 medium sized holes in a triangle, and 5 tiny ones above them). When I get the carb apart again, if a few basic checks don't solve it (idle mix needle...

Evinrude Big Twin: runs on choke only

Here they are, from when I initially rebuilt the carb in early October. I took these thinking maybe one day I would post the project online, but I didn't get every step. For example, I think I have the wire needle retainer that people sometimes call a spring running through the hole in the...

Evinrude Big Twin: runs on choke only

Thanks for the idea! I remember checking the reed to plate contact (no daylight in between reed and plate once assembled). 1. Your question did make me wonder whether I had installed them the right direction, so I went back to check. Here are the process photos. Looks like they're facing...

Evinrude Big Twin: runs on choke only

Thanks Pappy ; appreciate the questions. I'm focused on fuel at this point, based on consistent advice. I'll have a chance to get back to this next weekend, so until then I'm planning what I'll do next. . Idle mix bearing/packing: I'm going to make sure the 4 washers are fully compressed...

Evinrude Big Twin: runs on choke only

Thanks Shaugh. I usually say, "think horses, not zebras" - so hopefully it's something basic and straightforward like this. Will get back to it this weekend, do exactly the process you outlined, and see what happens.

Evinrude Big Twin: runs on choke only

Thanks CRS and Shaugh. . Idle bushing and packing: I'll take a look at this. Any way to seal that bushing (like we would inside the block or gear case) without risking the sealant material getting into the idle circuit? Will also get serious about the packing and nut and see what that does...
