looks like a great starting platform. maybe have a local sandblaster company spray it for a even and clean surface to start with. I started a previous build after fresh sandblast was a great idea! good luck with the build

something you may want to try is flipping the motor around, than you can have the handle facing you and still using it as usual

i went to the hardware store and got new stainless steel bolts and screws for the rebuild, i actually used pieces or nylon strapping as hinges so i wouldn't have any rusting issues. boat is in storage for the winter but in the spring i can send you lots of detailed pictures. thanks
