How about a 2x4 going from under the 2x4 to the floor. Then you would need minimal attachement to the bench itself.

Not an expert here but I would check the current angle at minimum trim then remount the old moter and check the same. Are you simply dealing with a geometry problem? If the new one can't get to the same angle or less then the transome wedges should be a simple fix.

Plus red has the added benefit of being less likely to kill your night vision. Astronomy nuts use them so they dont trip over their gear and to read different star charts without having to wait so long to dark adapt for telescope viewing.
