    Elco electric outboards

This is absolutely NOT directed at the OP!! I really wish these electric outboards had never made the mainstream. I like the quiet solitude of the electric only lakes I fish. Oars, paddle or a conventional electric tm. Now I'll have to deal with wakes and the general sillyness that accompanies...

    Easily removable battery extension cables

I'm late to the party but Anderson connectors are what you need. If installing them is a bit out of your skill set then the ProControll trolling motor wire harness is very nice and more plug and play. They sell 2 different types. One is pricey at $100 or so and one is roughly $35. You pick with...

    Portable chargers vs on-board chargers

The Century K3152-1 puts out a full 10 amps when that option is selected.

    Portable chargers vs on-board chargers

This is correct. Both MK and MG say to disconnect electronics from the battery/batteries and this includes trolling motors! I use a Century K3152-1 portable charger and have gotten excellent service from it.

    Minn Kota rant

Oh boy..... I've owned both MK (MinnKota) and MG (MotorGuide) for decades now. Minimal issues out of either brand. That said, the MK's I own are older. When I was outfitting my 1542 a few years ago I shopped both MK and MG. I did not like what I saw with the newer MK's or what I was hearing on...

Some recommendations and general thoughts on outfitting a tinboat

A bit more on seating. I left the two tank style seats in the boat as is. I was not going to be building a raised casting deck and anymore I just prefer to be lower 'in' the boat than high up 'on' the boat. But I did want something comfortable and maintenance free and 'bomb proof'. There are a...

Some recommendations and general thoughts on outfitting a tinboat

I would also like to add some thoughts on motors. I mentioned that I primarily only fish electric only lakes/ponds. However this would apply to those buying outboards as well. Before buying anything, think long and hard about how you will use the boat, your 'needs', and lastly your 'wants'...

Some recommendations and general thoughts on outfitting a tinboat

In July of 2018 I bought an Alumacraft 1542 flat bottom jon boat. This was to replace a Princecraft 1436 flat bottom jon boat (which I still have and can't sell!!). I fish mostly electric only lakes. Varying in size from 2 to 80ish acres. There are 3 State and 2 County Parks in my County in IL...

    Battery charger help needed.

I think I've found what I'm looking for- https://www.centurywelding.com/CenturyK3152-1.shtml As for not liking the modern push button automatic only chargers, they just seem to be very very cheaply made. I'll also look into the Se-1010. Was not aware those were still made. Thanks!

    Battery charger help needed.

My old Schumacher charger kicked the bucket after two decades or more of faithful service. I have been looking online for a replacement. I now have a headache from trying to find a simple basic charger. Mine had a switch for automatic or manual charging. It had a switch for 2amp 6 volt or 10 amp...

    Decided to go finesse

I prefer finesse/life like presentations. Produce better for me than swimbaits or other giant sized lures.

    Decking thats not wood

When I was outfitting my new 1542, I pondered the exact same question. I wanted a rot proof 'forever' floor that was a light as possible. I took a risk based on literally just a couple of guys on this forum who had tried it. I used FRP. I used the 1.5" thick Owens Corning Foamular 250 between...

Junk or Gem - Trophy Strike Trolling Motor

There is a reason why Minnkota and Motorguide are still 'Kings of the mountain' in a market awash with cheap trolling motors. It's because none of the cheapies come close to the initial quality and long term reliability of MK and MG. And what about parts/service when something does eventually...

Some thoughts on batteries for small tin boats.

I bought the batteries last fall when I started wiring the boat. Without looking for the receipt and going by memory, I want to say I paid $153 +/- for each battery. I had no battery to turn in for the 'core charge'. So after tax and core charge the cost was just under $350 +/-. I'm still...

Battery life without a charging system

Further more I just remembered that when I was planning the layout for the new Jon boat, I went to the local Interstate battery store with wiring diagram in hand. The counter guy I got seemed to be more knowledgeable than the typical dumb counter jockey that seems to get that job. I explained...

Battery life without a charging system

I have no reason to lie. That's what Interstate told me in reference to their brand of deep cycle marine battery I was using back then. Johnson Controls told me that in reference to the deep cycles I use to back up the fire alarm controls at my place of work. While each battery is smaller than...

Battery life without a charging system

12 volt lead acid flooded cell deep cycle or dual purpose batteries are best charged via a charger that has an output of 10-15 amps. These batts need an input of 10-15 amps for the best life span and proper charging. This is straight from Johnson Controls recently and Interstate told me...
