    1962 Evinrude 18hp- Compression Tests

Yeah good point about fuel source. I wonder what the best way to test that is? And for remaining fuel left behind throughout the entire system, i like to flush my outboards after each use when brought back home. Figured i would switch over to the TruFuel engineered 40:1 or 50:1 mix during the...

    1962 Evinrude 18hp- Compression Tests

sounds good, thank you @thill and @airshot. Yeah the manual says run 25:1 for first 10 hours and then 50:1 thereafter. Which is a separate topic ha.... "best oil fuel ratio for a 60's outboard"... after breakin with 25:1 i plan to use ethanol free gas with my oil, probably at 50:1

    1962 Evinrude 18hp- Compression Tests

Good morning! This 18hp has 2x cylinders. I tested compression after a few mins of the engine running to get an accurate "wet test". Top measured 98 psi and bottom measured 90 psi. Gladly they are within 10psi of each other, so I am not too worried. I did rebuild this engine. New pistons, rings...

1962 18hp Evinrude- is the thermostat working?

Oh wow so there really isnt any water exiting to verify if thermostat works? Just simply measure temps with an infrared thermometer around the head and thermostat housing?

1962 18hp Evinrude- is the thermostat working?

*update- this is the thermostat I ordered off MarineEngine, its an OMC part: 5005440 - Thermostat, 143 Degrees. Ill have to shoot the thermostat area with an infrared thermometer to see whats happening with temps I suppose... ill also remove the thermostat and see if water shoots out to verify...

1962 18hp Evinrude- is the thermostat working?

Hi LDUBS thank you for your response. It is comforting to hear that my situation is similar elsewhere. I know on these old outboards there is no "tell tale" like modern outboards, it just shoots out the main shaft with exhaust, so I didnt want that to be unclear/mistaken. Good to see we are on...

1962 18hp Evinrude- is the thermostat working?

Hi there, new thermostat and water pump. Water shoots out the exhaust on startup and while idling but temperature is warm to the touch the entire time. Didnt feel hot/cold/hot/cold. Is this okay? How do I know if the thermostat is working? Water pump seems fine. Hard steady flow. My next idea is...

Hey all! I got it to work great!! Adjusted the points to close and open on high side of the lobe. Brand new Sierra coils- 10.4 ohms resistance???

Hi there, I recently bought brand new sierra coils for my older outboard. Ran a resistance test on them with a multimeter before installing onto the magento plate- both read 10.4 ohms. Is this Okay? Does it translate to poor spark? My original coils which I thought had gotten bad still read 4.23...
