    Paint and Varnish

Another option would be porch enamel. The oil stuff is polyurethane. Stands up well in our sometimes harsh Midwest weather, should stay on a boat pretty good too.

Transom replacement, curved to straight question

In your shoes, I might go straight across too. Sounds like the motor will be close to where it needs to be anyhow and you can make a new top cap yourself out of a piece of square tubing of the correct size. Just cut/grind one side off and drop it right on. I do a bit of metal fabbing and...

    Johnson 6 Project

Thanks gentlemen. Never would have expected to find threaded holes under the center bolt. It does seem like a nice little motor. So simple it's almost amazing. Compression is pretty good too, 80/80.

Probably could, is that OK to do though? I'd hate to mess it up.

    Alternative to Gluvit

Growing up a buddy of mine was the son of an over the road driver. He made 2 West coast runs a week and always brought back something good: COORS! Illegal to have E of the Mississippi and the old boy kept a good eye on his stash. Yet every once in awhile we'd end up with a 6 pack. Pure liquid...

Does Thompson's Water Seal contain chem. harmful to Alum. ??

Didn't read the whole thread, but I used to build a lot of decks and Thompsons IMO is crap. It's like car wax. After a few rains the water no longer beads up. When it first came out it said to reapply 4x a year.

Transom bolts - what kind to use?

You know, I'm sure you guys are right about all these chemical reactions and how vulnerable the alum is to deterioration when certain materials are in contact with it. Maybe because I'm 1,000 miles away from the salt, but I'm not seeing any of this. Even though I've had tinnies that had regular...

    Johnson 6 Project

So finally getting around to reviving a little OMC I've had in the shed for a year. So far all I know is it has no spark on either cylinder. Motor has no kill switch, so guess it's time to pull the flywheel. With no top mounted pull start, there doesn't seem to be any threaded holes. So am I...

    Alternative to Gluvit

Hate to sound like a broken record, but why? Are boats scarce where you live? Around me a GOOD 12'-14' tinny is worth $100-300. One in this kind of shape is pretty much worth scrap value, so I'd not mess with it to be honest. Scrap it, add a hundred or two to what you get and buy a better taken...

I love rivet nuts - but need some way to touch up the mistakes :)

What are rivet nuts? This something new to me. Looks like you need an expensive tool to install them maybe? For touching up, just find paint that matches one of the colors. Prob can get some rattle can stuff and shoot a little bit into a jar or something. Auto parts stores also offer touch-up...

    Experienced opions on my setup

As a guy who unfortunately had a bit of experience getting a 14' back to the dock under trolling power 2 years ago I have to say no. I was on still water with a decent battery and good sized troller. I had no trouble getting back, but it took like 20 mins to go 3/4 of a mile maybe. If I hit ANY...

Mid 1980’s Mercury 35 wire corrosion

Not to be argumentative, but I disagree with most of this. Rarely do you find a solid wire on anything except house wiring. I think the key to success is having the correct size shrink tube. Properly applied, it has to be nearly waterproof. I've also been known to double shrink connections if...

Has anyone made a homemade OB motor lift strap to hoist motor onto boat?

I see what you're saying. Your idea is better.

    77 Smoker-craft Bench Seat Mods

UPS around here is pretty good. Same with Fedex, but seems like it comes down to if the driver gives a **** or not. The Fedex driver is a kindly older lady who looks to have a few years on me. Feel sorry for her having to work so hard at her advanced age. Also it seems like Fedex puts no shelves...

    Trouble with hull ID

Just take your best guess and see if it flies? Worst they can do is tell you to apply for a proper HIN. It's a bit of a pain, but do-able. I'm sending off an app for a HIN today. In Indiana it usually takes 2 weeks to get the HIN, then have to stamp it out, apply it to the boat, get a police...

    What is a Jon Boat?

Don't laugh. At least 3/4s of the boats I see listed as a Jon have a V hull of some sort. For it to be Jon, I thought the front had to be squared off. Am I wrong?

How many of you enjoy a decent stereo in a boat?

I'm pretty much in the no music on the boat camp, but I just acquired a JBL bluetooth speaker and wow does that thing sound good ! Loud too. Not sure if ever will take it out of the garage, but sure seems ideal for the boat if you really need to have some tunes along. Assuming we all have a cell...

Has anyone made a homemade OB motor lift strap to hoist motor onto boat?

Pretty interesting thread. I can heft anything 25 HP or less, but was thinking about setting something up for larger motors. Something simple. Is there any reason why 3 2x4s fashioned into a tripod wouldn't work? The tops being chained together maybe? I'd like something that can be put up...
