1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

Progress has been slow over the last week or two. The wood floors are finally ready to be sealed this weekend. I decided to install 3 hatches in the floor. After floor is installed I plan on cutting the foam directly under the hatches to make removable foam plugs. 90% of the time the foam will...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

I am swapping boat trailers before the boat floors are installed. The replacement trailer is in better shape but the frame rails are wider. Yellow - Current bunk setup on old trailer Blue/ Light Blue - Strakes & frame rails Red - Proposed new bunk location Are there any issues with going this...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

So true! I still need to pull two strips of tape off. I'll have to paint the top and interior once all the plywood is down. Floors will be drilled tonight so they can be covered in OTF this weekend.

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

I was rolling. I just put my 3rd color coat on last night. I thought about a 4th coat but the evening temps keep climbing and I don't want to risk screwing it up. It's looking smooth now. I adjusted my mixture and it worked great 3 nights ago and okay last night. 8parts paint, 2.5 parts mineral...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

Boat was wiped with undiluted vinegar and two wipes of acetone this morning. Rustoleum self etching primer was applied before rolling on R's professional white clean metal primer. It ended up being very windy today so the self etch primer did not go on smooth at all. The white primer after that...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

Spent some time sanding last night and hopefully applying etching primer and clean metal primer on Saturday morning. Questions: - 120 grit good enough for rolled on Rustoleum or should I go to 80grit for more bite? - Is it best to I wash it tonight and let it dry overnight? Planned painting...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

I'm starting to think about going with EVA flooring. My biggest issue is water getting into the front of the hull and sitting there. Maybe a week ago I washed down the inside, rested the tongue of the trailer on my Ram tailgate, and still had water trapped on all the ribs. I figured water would...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

I ended up notching the floor since the tunnels didn't seem to attach to the floor. Maybe they rested on it when it was built. I'll have a 1.5" aluminum angle attach the floor to the gunnel support to be safe. I have some BIG gaps between the floor and the boat to make water tight. Not sure how...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

I spent more time trying to get the bow template made than the other two combined. There had to be an easier way but I have it finished. I still need to add about 1' of cardboard towards the bow. Question: How does one get a 3/4" sheet of plywood to fit in this spot with the gunwale supports...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

Two floor boards are cut. I have some minor trimming and sanding to do. It's not perfect but I'm happy with it. I'll have the gap sealed up with Goop Marine. I'll leave an inch or two caulk free so water can drain into the bilge area. The third and final floor sheet is going to give me some...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

I did look at epoxy and went back and forth on it for weeks. What ultimately swayed my decision was already having a gallon of mineral spirits and others having issues with flooring adhesives sticking to the epoxy. I meant to say HF for Harbor Frieght. I went a different direction and just...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

I still have to research more on my above questions. I am working on cleaning up around seams and rivets inside the hull. I am hoping to Gluvit on the inside and Gflex on the outside by this weekend. Goal is to have foam and wood floor installed before May. The stainless steel wire wheel is...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

Wood sealing questions: - Should I apply the OTF before I fill the plywood voids with waterproof wood glue? If the wood doesn't swell with OTF then I think this would be better. - How long does it take for the OTF to dry before I can screw it down? - Do I need to keep coating it until it stops...

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

I never thought of mice... Since this will be stored in the garage I should be fine. If I ever need to store it outside I might make a plywood cover to fit over the bilge area and place two 10lb weight on it. Thank you for the heads up. It would have never crossed my mind.

1979 Sylvan Rodmaster Bare Bones Rebuild

Yes, the floor will be in 4' sections. I might seal the gaps between floor sections with caulking. I haven't made up my mind yet. I haven't done enough research.
