Talk me out of building my own (plywood/glass) boat?

Thanks. I was actually just browsing the thread on who makes the biggest jon boat ironically. I guess I just need to look a little harder. I'm looking for a simple boat-tiller steered, not much in the way of bells and whistles, so hopefully I can find a large, cheap aluminum hull. Aluminum...

Talk me out of building my own (plywood/glass) boat?

I've lurked around here a while and learned a lot about tin boats and lusted after used ones on Craigslist. Now that I finally have the funds (new job with a raise in pay) I've been looking around and trying to find a boat that will accommodate my family and what I want to do with it. We live...

    FREE BOAT!!!

Hehe...yeah I know, but for someone like me who doesn't have the cash to plunk down $1000-2000 all at once for a solid used boat, having something free to start with is a big help. This way I can spend $50-100 at a time a weekend here and a weekend there to get it going. I have a good friend...

    FREE BOAT!!!

Thanks-I just want to add a disclaimer though that the boat pictured is not the one I'm getting-it's just a picture of something similar I dug up on the internet. The real pics will be up soon though!

    FREE BOAT!!!

So over the weekend I'm letting the dog out for his morning business as usual and I happen to look over at the yard one house over from ours and happened to notice what looked like a boat under a tarp behind a shed. I mentioned it to my wife because the folks whose yard it was are friendly...

    Need help spec'ing out a 14 foot V-hull

This is the answer I was looking for. I'm not all that concerned with speed really-from the ramp to where we want to go is anywhere from 2-3 miles straight across the water. If you're telling me that with a 9.9 on a 16' loaded with three people, a dog, and gear, that I can do 10 MPH that works...

    Need help spec'ing out a 14 foot V-hull

That's part of my problem-I'm not sure because I just don't know enough about boat size/weight/capacity vs. horsepower. Just as an example, the Alumacraft V-16 has a beam of 70", a bow height of 30" and will hold 5/1380lbs, but is that way too much boat for a 9.9? If not, then sure, I'll go...

    Need help spec'ing out a 14 foot V-hull

It's starting (emphasis on starting-it snowed here this morning) to get warm again and my thoughts are turning away from firewood and deer hunting and back to the water. I found tinboats last summer when I was wishing I had a boat and now I'm committing to seriously looking for a fixer-upper as...

Building an all purpose recreational boat-where to start?

Hi everyone. I'm glad I found this forum because I'm one of those guys that can't leave anything alone, so now that I'm looking for a boat, why would it be any different? I live in Hunterdon County, NJ which is in the northwest portion of the state, where most of the larger lakes are. I'm also...
