    Alumacraft Backtracker 17 Project Completed

I'm sort of over budget (according to my wife) so the extra pedestal seats will come next year. When I got the boat there was no seat mount in the stern, and the previous owner used a folding chair. I did the same last year and it worked OK. I'm definitely putting in an adjustable pedestal...

    Alumacraft Backtracker 17 Project Completed

Here are some photos of my boat project. As you can see in the photos, I removed the boxes and live well to get more space. I borrowed an idea I saw on this web site and reinforced the sides using aluminum "L" bar riveted to the gunnel and ribs, then used the exposed bars for rod holders...

which type of plywood for decking?

I used the 3/4 inch plywood because I have a couple buddies who weight 275 lbs + and I want to put in pedestal seats. I was looking for a bit more strength in the deck. Also, I put blue foam insulation under the deck for flotation, too. That took out the flex in the plywood near the side...

    Best "dent hiding" paint

I just finished painting my boat last weekend. The base coat is a flat tan/swamp grass color from Hunter's Specialties applied with a brush. Then Rustoleum flat green camo in a rattle can. Then Hunter's Specialties flat mud brown sprayed with an airbrush. A rattle can would do as good of a...

    Gluvit?...

I painted the rivits on my boat with it using a paint brush from my son's paint set. It went on fine.

    Best "dent hiding" paint

A camo paint job can hide a multitude of sins.

How do you plug a through-hull fitting?

That does sound like the easiest fix. My wife says that I should just put a wooden flap over it and use it like a gun port on a pirate ship. She's a keeper

which type of plywood for decking?

Oops. I went out and shook the cans. I used almost 2 cans of epoxy and almost 2 cans of hardener.

How do you plug a through-hull fitting?

I removed the live well from my boat to make more room, plus you can't use live bait fish around here. So now I have three holes in my hull--two in the stern below the waterline near the drain plug (on for pumping the water in and the other for draining it out of the live well), and on big 2"...

which type of plywood for decking?

I used West System 105 resin and West System 205 hardener. I bought the pumps that screw onto the cans and they deliver metered amounts in the right proportion. It takes all the guess work out of the ratio of hardener to resin. One pump of resin and one pump of hardener and you have the right...

    how to fix a leak??

I used Glutit, too. It was real easy to work with. I mixed it up in small batches and painted the rivet heads with a small paint brush from my son's paint set. I had a couple leaking stress cracks, too. These I stop drilled and had a professional welder come over and fix. I found all the...

Does Stainless Steel React with Aluminum?

Hey Patriot2. Thanks for the info. I like the way your boat looks. Do you get a lot of rain where you're at?

Foam under the decking, pros and cons...

I used the blue board insulation. I liked it because its easy to cut and fit to the shape of the boat. The other board insulation probably is good for the same reasons. It has made the deck sturdier and more quiet.

which type of plywood for decking?

I used 3/4 in exterior grade plywood and coated it with epoxy. I covered it with outdoor carpet and riveted the deck to the rails that support the deck.

    Replacing Rivets??

I'm sure that there are lots of good web sites to order from. I ordered my aluminum rivets from McMaster-Carr.

Does Stainless Steel React with Aluminum?

Does anyone know if its OK to use stainless steel components on an aluminum? I'd like to attach some tie downs on an aluminum hull, and the only one I can find are steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel. I'll attach the tie down with an aluminum rivet. Just dont want to use anything...

    Boat painting

I used a brush to paint the tan base color and am going to use a rattle can to apply the camo patterns.

    boat mod ideas/help

You should be fine duck hunting from your boat. My son and I have hunted for years from our 14' canoe. Also, I've removed the side storage boxes from my boat and reinforced it with angle iron (aluminum) tying from the tunnel to the ribs on the bottom. Its way stiffer now than it was with the...

    Hunter's Specialties Paint Camo Paint

Have any of you ever used Hunter's Specialties camo paint? I brush-painted my aluminum boat with the marsh grass color (2 coats, primed with a latex aluminium primer). It's cured for a week and is still sort of soft (I can dent it with my thumb nail) and it scratches pretty easy. Does this...
