New poster - jet boat question

That sounds like a fun combination. A 35 on the back end will make it a little rear heavy. I put a 25 jet on a lightweight 1436 jon, and it was a very nice combination. It took some tweaking to get the manual trim just right, but was nearly unstoppable once on the water.

How many of you are running a 60/40 merc 4 stroke

Hmm. My 60/40 4 stroke has an aluminum impeller. I wonder who replaced the factory one. I would like to step up to a SS soon, but worried about loosing top end speed. Do you recommend a 3 or 4 blade model? I hit 25 mph going upriver and up-wind last weekend with the water up 3 feet. Had 2...

T-Post or Painters Extension Handle Shallow Water Anchor?

I used a 12' section of 1 or 2" schedule 80 PVC conduit for a cheap push pole/ anchor. Glued a "T" fitting on one end for the push side, and cut a 45" edge on the other to help embed it into the sandy bottom. I slide it down a 6" section of 2" pipe that I bolted to the transom to give it a...

Ever had a close call while on the water?

I was alone, headed upriver to deer hunt in 20 degree weather in my 14' 25hp jet outboard. As I rounded a small riffle my motor died suddenly, which never happens. I quickly noticed that the fuel line quick connected had popped off, so I clipped it back on and pumped the bulb. As I went to...

Sheared the driveshaft on my Merc 50

Looks like some nice repair and welding work there. I arc welded a small shaft and pulley back together once, and by using the 12, 9, 3 and 6 tacks it stayed mostly in line too. Since most of the torque on a drive shaft is concentrated on the outer edge it looks like you got plenty of weld in...

Top end limit of 60 EFI Mercury Jet

To wrap this thread up it turns out the tach issues were all in the wiring. Found some pretty sketchy wiring connections under the console, and a loose wire nut on the tach- all with some corrosion. Cleaned it all up and added some dielectric grease- and it works just like new now. Shows idle...

    What's killing my motor?

If its not the starter then you might take a look at the prop key & housing. It might hookup in one direction, but slip and "clunk" in the other.

Top end limit of 60 EFI Mercury Jet

You raise an interesting point about the impeller sharpening side. While I still think that the tach is not reading correctly, the grind on the auger could add to the problems too. As an engineer by trade, I always try to follow the manual on manufactured parts. I did sharpen this auger per...

Top end limit of 60 EFI Mercury Jet

Man, a person can really sound uneducated when they don't proofread. I meant that when trimmed DOWN the bottom front of the foot is 1/4" higher than the bottom of the boat. When trimmed to horizontal; the back of the foot is level with the bottom of the hull- so I think it is reasonably good...

Top end limit of 60 EFI Mercury Jet

Really appreciate the help here. I just took ownership of the boat, but it has been in the family for the last 8 years. As far as I know, the tach has always been like that. What got me thinking about it is when I bump the throttle the tach jumps to 3,000 rpm but the boat hardly moves. I've...

Top end limit of 60 EFI Mercury Jet

Ran into an interesting problem this weekend on the river. I was barely able to get up on plane going upstream, even when pushing the engine nearly up to 6,000 rpm. I shut it down and checked for blockages and debris, which there were none, but noticed when turned off, the tach still read...

New Jon Boat Owner With Old Jon Boat HELP??

Can you access it from inside and pound it back to it's original shape? I would then use something slightly flexible (like 5200) to cover over it. If its really bad then think about placing a thin aluminum plate over the section. However, if it's on the bottom and stands proud, then it will...

Anyone tried to hang a small jet on a 1436?

I'm a bit late to this party, but I modified my Lowe 1436 with a reinforced transom & 5 inch lift to fit my Mariner 25 jet. I used 6000 series aluminum to plate over the back side and aluminum struts in front, sandwiching a pine 2x6. It also has two small steel angle brackets to carry the...

60 EFI Mercury Jet- No Thrust

Found a possible culprit- the linkage to the reverse gate has a nasty tear and kink in it- which was probably keeping it from fully locking the gate out of the way. It shifts fine while trimmed up in the driveway, but I bet it was kinked on the water. The kink has grease from the pivot bearing...

60 EFI Mercury Jet- No Thrust

Just took out a family owned boat for the first time in a few years after it sat for 12 months. Previously it ran great on the 1652J Alweld boat- easily on plane and effortless cruising. Motor started easily and idled very smooth. After warming up and trying to accel it just pitched the nose...

have u ever hit anything solid while cruising?

I've had a 2 foot diameter log stump come drifting down the river and smack the side of the boat and jet foot while anchored. Not fun to get nearly swamped when it catches on the foot and drags the side of the boat down. No dents though. A few years ago I was using my canoe and trolling motor...

    Jet Drive Transom Saver

As long as you are hauling the boat with the motor in the fully trimmed down position you should not need any additional support. Putting the motor in reverse will lock it down to keep it from bouncing around. The transom savers are there to support all the weight and torque on the transom...

    14ft lowe jon boat

That would be the smallest that I would go for what you are describing. I have a 1436L with a 20 jet and a full front deck- and a high seat in the back. Its just fine to fish while standing in the front and back, but I'm usually in calm river water. I like the narrow body that I can paddle if...

    25 HP Mercury Jet Motor

I like them, but you have to know the limitations. I run a 25 Mariner on a decked 1436 jon and it is a highly capable boat. Planes out easily with 2 guys and gear, and it light enough to man-handle if you get in trouble. When properly trimmed it will run in 4" of water. Would probably run...
