Mine started giving me the same symptoms as you are describing. There should be a primer bulb inside an aluminum housing( just to the side of the little blue button). This primer is made of mesh with a rubber sort of coating. After several years the coating will wear off and allow the engine to pull air through the primer mesh. When this happens those small mercs are hard to start and won't run smooth at all.
