In skinny water that 2” can be a pretty big margin of clearance, which is why I’ll probably make one this year when I tear down to repaint. For me, I think it’s worth it.
Love the build! I’d say that only YOU can determine whether the time/cost investment is worth it. You’ve clearly put a lot into your boat already. Did you need to do all that? Probably not… What are you trying to gain? As poorthang mentioned above, performance wise you will probably make minimal gains. Is 1-2 mph top-end worth $100 bucks in materials and your time to build it? I’ve been leaning toward making a jack plate for my 14’ Starcraft. For me, it’s not nearly as much about top end performance/speed as it is about a skeg clearance. The boat will see a lot of river time, and in the summer I run some pretty shallow spots with stumps and old pilings. The outboard right now is about 2” below “optimal” height. In skinny water that 2” can be a pretty big margin of clearance, which is why I’ll probably make one this year when I tear down to repaint. For me, I think it’s worth it. And I just like making stuff :)
