Yes that's normal. Transducer needs to be in the water to operate correctly.

The prices are all pretty close (except the merc) If $200 isn't going to break you, I say go with the Suzuki if that's the one that most appeals to you. 2nd choice would be the yamaha. I'd be eliminating the merc based on price. (even though I'm really happy with mine.)
