So, I'm going tomorrow to buy a 1542. My question is: should i install a wooden transom on the boat or do I just attach my motor(9.9) straight to the aluminum?

Just install outboard to aluminum transom.

I bought some 1/2" starboard and used the 3m adhesive (3100 maybe?) and put the starboard on the transom as not to damage it.

I'm looking at this boat too. How is that 9.9 hp doing pushing this boat?

I was actually surprised at how well the 9.9 has done. I asked that question on here also, before I bought it. It gets on plane no problem with fishing gear and two people.

I mounted a piece of 1x6 to the inside of my transom because the clamp bolts on my 9.9 Merc were bottomed out against the handles and I wanted to be sure that they were good and tight.

I thought I might have to do that to with my yamaha, but I still had a couple of threads left.

You should be good to go, I bet you can't wait for your fishing partner to get a little older so she can go with you.

I really can't. I took her out for a little ride the other day, and she loved every bit of it. I let her steer the trolling motor, and she smiled and laughed the whole time, it was great.
