1995 Mercury Throttle Assembly Question

I'm hoping someone on this forum may have had experience with a similar setup. I'm trying to take apart my throttle assembly (see below pictures) and I am obviously missing something.

You can see in the third picture where the cast piece meets the painted metal. I am assuming once I get the plastic off of the throttle handle itself, that there will be a bolt that I can loosen to disassemble. However, I can't figure out how to get the plastic off without breaking it. I've been referring to the following 2 diagrams, but it looks easier on paper than it is in real life.

Any help would be much appreciated.
 
I have no personal experience with a Merc control...

Some of the other brands have the plastic part held on with built-in plastic tabs. You remove those units by squeezing the casing in the correct area. The right squeeze opens the plastic tabs. Just like a "safety-lock cap" on medicine bottles.
