How can I find out the year of a motor. Someone gave me a 20hp Johnson. It is an older model. I'd like to figure out what year it is.

Let us know what you've got.

I was given a 62' Rude- I had reservations..... One of the best da__ed motors I have ever run, runs like its fuel injected, I love it.

The model number on the engine is not on the list. I'm going to try looking it up be serial number. Here are some pics of it:ImageUploadedByTapatalk1363908599.448729.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1363908621.642362.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1363908638.449683.jpg

Spark and fuel,

If it won't at least "fire", cough or sputter- its bad spark delivery, or bad fuel delivery, its just that simple.

Honestly looks like a solid old Rude to me- those are killers.

Try putting some pre-mixed fuel in a spray bottle, spray a little in the carb with the throttle held on fast. Twist back to "start", close the choke if there is one and give her a few yanks. If it sputters you have spark.. If it sputters real good you have good spark. They really are the golden age of Rude' I love my older Rudes. I had a 71 18 horse I gave away- dohhh! It really felt more like a 25 to run it.

Pull the plugs and put oil in the pistons. Lay the motor so the spark plug holes are up. The goal is to soak the piston rings with oil before you crank it over. Let it sit overnight or two. More oil wont hurt. Then try to crank it over by hand. Take it slow. You don't want to break a ring. Once she moves, oil it up and repeat until you get her freed up pretty good. Now worry about getting her fired up.

That is great information guys. I really appreciate it.

Any idea what the fuel:eek:il mixture is?

Dern near bullet proof Motors! I have a 20hp of the same era. It once sat out back on an old boat for 3 years while I played w a different boat. 20 pulls later she was purring like a lil kitten!

Glad to hear that. Honestly have not messed with it yet. We've had decent weather around here for a few days been working oon getting the boat ready for paint. But the motor is calling my name!!!!

With an unknown motor i highly recomend oiling the cylinders, new plugs, and a good cleaning of the carbs before trying to start it. Do these things and two to one it will go.
