pull start fix

New to boating got a evinrude 9.5....for lack of better words
The "bendix" is not lifting up and engaging into the flywheel
When I pull on the rope. I can lift ir manually ant ir will stay in place
Until I pull it . What is broke and how do I fix this?

Normally you have to give it a quick 6 inch jerk of the rope to throw the pinion gear into the flywheel. Make sure that the spring is wound up. There should be a pin that rides in the groove on the pinion gear. That is what pushes it up to the flywheel.

It probably wouldn't hurt to clean any dirt or old lubricant off the gear n shaft and re lube it with a light coat of oil or lithium.
